Close-up of the largest zebra species still in existence on the planet, weighing nearly half a ton

Grévy's zebras are the largest of the horse family. They can grow up to 1.6 metres tall and weigh over 400 kg, dwarfing plains and mountain zebras. Photo: Pinterest. Their name comes from a French politician. This zebra species was named after Jules Grévy – a 19th-century French President who was given a zebra from Ethiopia as a diplomatic gift. Photo: Pinterest.
They have a more distinctive striped pattern than other species. The stripes of Grévy's zebra are thinner, denser and more regular, especially the belly area is completely white, clearly different from other zebra species. Photo: Pinterest. Grévy's zebras live mainly in semi-desert regions. They are found in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia, where the dry climate and scarce water resources force them to travel long distances each day to find food and water. Photo: Pinterest.
They have flexible social habits. Unlike plains zebras, which live in permanent herds, Grévy's zebras can live alone or in temporary groups, depending on food and water availability. Instead of neighing like a horse, Grévy’s zebras make a deep, long call – characteristic of donkeys, reflecting their close evolutionary relationship. Photo: Pinterest.
They are a critically endangered species of zebra. It is estimated that there are only about 2,500 left in the wild due to habitat loss, competition with livestock and poaching. They are currently listed as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List. Photo: Pinterest.
