The diplomatic row underscores a serious deterioration in relations between the two Commonwealth nations, according to Reuters. Relations have been strained since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last year that he had evidence that Indian spies were involved in Nijjar's assassination.

During a press conference on October 14, Mr. Trudeau also announced that the Canadian government now has "clear and convincing evidence that agents of the Indian government have been engaged in activities that pose a significant threat to public safety." Those activities include covert information collection, coercion, targeting of South Asian Canadians and more than 10 acts of intimidation and violence, according to Mr. Trudeau.

Meanwhile, New Delhi on October 14 rejected Ottawa's move on the investigation into the assassination of leader Nijjar, and accused Mr. Trudeau of pursuing a political conspiracy.
