Nghe An focuses on developing industrial crop materials to meet deep processing requirements.

To meet the strict requirements of deep processing and increase the value of agricultural products, mountainous localities of Nghe An province have focused on creating stable, high-quality raw material sources, especially key industrial crops such as acacia, cassava and tea.

Improve the quality of raw material areas

Through efforts to improve the quality of raw material areas, in 2024, Nghe An Tea Development Joint Stock Company had 40 hectares of tea certified organic. This area has a tight chain link, is cared for according to its own process, and the products are guaranteed to be clean and free of heavy metal residues.

Mr. Nguyen Luong Toan - Deputy General Director of the Company said: Due to the small output, not enough for export, green tea products made from organic tea are currently consumed in the domestic market. However, the selling price is up to hundreds of thousands of VND/kg while normal tea products are only 20 - 30 thousand VND/kg; and the price of raw materials for people is also higher by 500 - 600 thousand VND/ton.

With 1,500 hectares of tea raw material area, having a trading relationship between people and businesses, Nghe An Tea Development Joint Stock Company basically does not lack raw materials for processing. However, in the production of raw tea, there are still shortcomings, technical processes are not strictly followed, management is lax, product quality cannot meet the requirements of processing for export to "difficult" and high-value markets.

To overcome this problem, create raw material sources to meet the requirements of deep processing, and increase production value, in the coming time, the company will focus on building organic tea areas. Accordingly, it will build and strengthen the connection between tea growers and factories, in which the factory will transfer scientific and technological advances from land preparation, new planting, care and especially management of fertilizer and pesticide use.

To ensure close and secure connections, it is necessary to establish cooperatives and cooperatives to act as a "bridge" between people and businesses to ensure legality and responsibility between the two parties; the chain must be built through contracts, in order to build safe raw material areas, ensure raw materials for deep processing, and products that meet export standards to "difficult" and high-value markets.

Mr. Nguyen Luong Toan - Deputy General Director of Nghe An Tea Development Joint Stock Company

Sharing the same goal of producing and exporting high-value tea products, Asia Hoa Son Joint Stock Company has focused on developing more than 50 hectares of organic tea; the enterprise also signed a contract to purchase raw materials from farmers on an area of 4,000 hectares of tea, thereby expanding the export market.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Giang - Deputy General Director of the company: In just the first 8 months of the year, export turnover increased by nearly 40% over the same period. However, currently, not only demanding markets such as Russia and Europe have very strict standards, but large, traditional markets such as West Asian countries, which account for more than 60% of export output, are also increasingly tightening food safety standards. To meet this requirement, the company aims to develop an additional 300 hectares of organic tea by 2028.

In addition, in 2022, with the goal of exporting products to the European market, the company has invested in a deep processing line, producing Glucose sugar products, with the requirement that cassava raw materials must meet organic standards. To date, the company has built more than 100 hectares of cassava certified organic, meeting the requirements for producing products for export to the US.

In the first 8 months of this year, the company has exported the first batch of goods to the US and signed export orders to Europe until the end of the year. Based on the positive market prospects, Asia Hoa Son Joint Stock Company strives to expand the area of clean raw materials to 3,000 hectares by 2028.

Increasing the value of key crops in mountainous areas

With more than 6,300 hectares of production forest, developing raw material trees is one of the "spearheads" of economic development in Anh Son commune, including acacia trees. At the Resolution of the Commune Party Congress, many solutions were identified to increase the quality of raw materials to meet the increasingly high requirements of processing, increase production value sustainably and stably, and improve people's income.

Mr. Nguyen Tran Chuong, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: We focus on advising, guiding and encouraging people to apply standard production processes from seeding to care and harvesting, especially expanding the production of large acacia timber forests, considering this an important direction to increase production value.

“In recent years, the purchase price of raw acacia has increased quite a bit, and there is almost no premature cutting and selling in the area. However, the area of large timber plantations is not large, so if there are processing enterprises that cooperate and purchase stably, the locality and people are willing to cooperate,” said Mr. Nguyen Tran Chuong.

With the advantage of large area and diverse climatic conditions for the development of many types of crops, in recent years, the mountainous areas of the province have formed large raw material areas for tea, acacia, sugarcane, cassava, etc.; the agricultural and forestry processing industry is also one of the "key" areas that the province prioritizes for development. Since then, the issue of building raw material areas has also received attention.

Every year, Nghe An allocates tens of billions of VND from the budget to support investment and increase the value of raw materials; in particular, many enterprises invest in building processing factories, which has significantly contributed to promoting the development of quality raw material areas. To date, the whole province has more than 25,000 hectares of forests that have achieved sustainable certification; nearly 8,000 hectares of tea are being exploited, producing about 70,000 tons of fresh buds each year. Of which, there are over 100 hectares of VietGAP and organic tea, meeting the standards to meet the requirements of deep processing.

To increase the value of input materials and serve deep processing for businesses, Nghe An needs to continue implementing synchronous solutions from the state, businesses and people.

We need to do a good job of planning production areas and developing raw materials, which is linked to processing facilities and factories; at the same time, there must be solutions to manage raw material areas to ensure that raw material areas must meet standards, not only to meet domestic consumption processing but also to ensure processing for export.

Ms. Vo Thi Nhung - Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture and Environment
