Ronaldo had problems with being overweight while playing for Real Madrid. |
The Italian returned to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2006 under President Ramon Calderon, tasked with restoring glory after three years without a trophy. But Capello soon realised the Galacticos era was coming to an end, and Ronaldo - despite his great symbolism - was no longer suitable for the team.
“Ronaldo was the best player I ever coached,” Capello said frankly. “But he loved to party, he went out every night, he weighed 94kg and he wouldn’t lose weight. I told the president we had to let him go, there was no other way. In the end, we did. But I still say: he is a real genius.”
At that time, Real Madrid recruited Van Nistelrooy from Manchester United to lead the attack, while Ronaldo was gradually removed from the plan. In the winter transfer window of 2007, the Brazilian striker moved to AC Milan for only 7 million euros - a modest figure compared to the previous valuation of 25 million euros.
That season, Real Madrid won La Liga, but ironically Capello was sacked shortly after. A year later, neither he nor Ronaldo were at the Bernabeu - closing the final chapter of the glorious Galácticos era.
