The Strange Story of Lammens

Having once chosen goalkeeping just to "avoid running and not being substituted", Senne Lammens is now preparing to face the biggest challenge of his life at Anfield.

Lammens switched to goalkeeper because he was "lazy to run and didn't want to be substituted".

Joining the "Red Devils" in the summer of 2025 from Royal Antwerp for £18.2 million, the 23-year-old goalkeeper quickly made his mark with impressive performances and tenacity. His clean sheet debut in a 2-0 win over Sunderland made many fans believe that MU had a new gem in goal.

Few people know that Senne's journey to the Premier League began with a lazy decision. According to his brother Tom Lammens, Senne used to be a strong, fast striker who often made defenders miserable. But at the age of 10, the boy suddenly asked to switch to goalkeeper, simply because "he didn't want to run too much and was afraid of being substituted in the middle of a game".

His father, former player Eddy Lammens, thought it was just a passing fancy and sent him to a goalkeeping camp. Little did he know that this would be a turning point. With his tall build and good reflexes, Senne quickly showed his natural instincts in goal.

Lammens was a striker as a child.

From his hometown club KRC Bambrugge, he followed his brother to FCV Dender, then was recruited by Club Brugge after impressing in youth tournaments. Here, Senne developed strongly, especially in his ability to control the 16.50m area and handle the ball under pressure. When Royal Antwerp offered him a starting opportunity, he took it without hesitation and his mature performances in Belgium caught the attention of MU.

Before the big match against Liverpool, Senne received a witty message from his senior Thibaut Courtois: "Anfield is a very uncomfortable place. Maybe I should tell him to clap for the home crowd when he comes out to ease his nerves." Courtois believes his junior has enough personality to overcome the pressure: "He is tall, strong and not afraid of crosses. He is the type of goalkeeper with courage."

Liverpool are desperate for a win after a three-game losing streak, while United have found a new rhythm under Amorim. And if they keep their goal at Anfield, Senne Lammens - a man who was once afraid to run - could have the most memorable night of his young career.

For the past 7 years, the "Red Devils" have not known victory at Anfield and Senne is the hope for coach Amorim and his team to get points in the match taking place at 10:30 p.m. on October 19.
