On March 8, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that President Kim Jong-un supervised artillery firing drills by frontline units on March 7.

"The drill began with the test firing of the power of long-range artillery units near the border, which brought the enemy's capital into firing range and accomplished important military tasks for war deterrence," KCNA said.

The move comes as South Korea and the US began their annual Freedom Shield exercise on March 4 to strengthen deterrence against the threat from North Korea's nuclear weapons and missiles.

Previously, on March 6, Chairman Kim Jong-un inspected a large combat training facility in the western region of the country and directed the actual operations of the units.

In his speech, the leader asked the Korean People's Army (KPA) to further step up training at present, and set important tasks to increase practical exercises and improve combat readiness.

Meanwhile, Yonhap reported that the South Korean Air Force held an “elephant walk” exercise at a base just south of Seoul on March 8.

Participating in the air show of force training were 33 aircraft, including F-35A, KF-16, F-15K and F-4E stealth fighters, at the air base in Suwon.

During training, fully armed fighters fly in formation along the airfield to practice standard procedures before take-off and check their readiness.
