
M expands creative space for craft villages
Sharing about Bat Trang ceramic craft village, Vice Chairman of Bat Trang Commune People's Committee Do Thanh Thuan said that after implementing the 2-level local government model (from July 1, 2025), Bat Trang commune has 3 ceramic craft villages: Bat Trang, Giang Cao, Kim Lan with more than 6,000 households developing the profession. The commune has 173 artisans in the field of fine art ceramics who have been awarded titles by the State. Bat Trang currently has 49 products with valid OCOP certification, many of which have achieved 5 stars and 5-star potential. The pottery profession has developed, helping the average income per capita in the commune reach more than 87 million VND/person/year. In 2025, Bat Trang is expected to continue to evaluate and classify 16 more OCOP products and propose the city to appraise and recognize 15 artisans. The commune also continues to complete and implement the project to develop craft villages associated with experiential tourism .

Ms. Ha Thi Vinh, Vice President of the Vietnam Craft Village Association, President of the Hanoi Handicraft and Craft Village Association, and an experienced artisan and businesswoman in developing Bat Trang pottery, informed that with its long history and unique features, Bat Trang has become a symbol of Vietnamese pottery and an attractive tourist destination. Pottery production facilities in Bat Trang have been invested in renovation and upgrading, creating a space for visitors to visit and experience. Coming here, visitors can participate in the pottery production process to create handicraft products. In particular, at the Center for the Essence of Vietnamese Craft Villages (Bat Trang Pottery Museum), visitors can admire the unique architecture, beautiful works and learn about the history of the formation and development of Bat Trang craft village as well as the convergence of many other art forms, such as: Light sculpture, hat making, rattan and bamboo weaving... combined with artisans from all regions.

According to Ms. Ha Thi Vinh, to be recognized by the World Craft Council as a member of the World Creative Craft Cities Network requires a thorough preparation process. The Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment has provided a lot of support to "nurture" the craft and craft village businesses, helping them confidently step out into the world. In addition, there is the joint efforts of the entire village community. Each family and each clan in Bat Trang is the owner of a "ceramic museum", telling the story of their village to visitors. The production model combined with tourism in Bat Trang is highly appreciated by the World Craft Council.
Regarding the Son Dong statue carving craft village, the village is also striving to become a member of the World Network of Creative Craft Cities by 2025. According to Mr. Cao Van Tam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Dong commune, the craft village is famous for its techniques of carving, carving statues, making traditional worship items, and sophisticated gilding techniques, which are highly appreciated by domestic and foreign customers. The talented hands of Son Dong artisans have also left their mark on many cultural works in Hanoi, such as: Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam, Khue Van Cac, Ngoc Son Temple, The Huc Bridge, One Pillar Pagoda...

In recent years, many young people from craft villages have opened workshops and shops to introduce sculptures and handicrafts in big cities. To meet the recognition criteria in 2025, Son Dong is implementing many contents, in which the commune has arranged a headquarters to build a Creative Design Center, introduce and promote OCOP products and local handicrafts.
Accelerate the completion of criteria

During the field visit, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chuyen My commune, said that in order to complete the criteria for recognizing the mother-of-pearl inlay and lacquer craft village of Chuyen My as a member of the World Network of Creative Craft Cities in 2025, the People's Committee of the commune has focused on implementing the instructions of specialized agencies of the city and the central government. Regarding the construction of the traditional room, the commune has collected artifacts and photos of artisans according to each stage of the craft village's development; royal decrees recognizing traditional crafts; drawings of inlay craft samples of artisans and households; and arranged tables to display and store raw materials and products.

Chuyen My Commune has also completed the construction of a photo album of craft village products through each period; designed a multilingual website, propaganda videos, promoting products and the history of the craft village; printed leaflets introducing traditional mother-of-pearl and lacquer inlay products. The commune has decorated and displayed the Certificate of recognition of the craft village, the royal decree, and the Third Class Medal of the Lacquer Cooperative; arranged an exhibition area for antiques, pictures, and materials of mother-of-pearl and lacquer inlay through each period. In addition, the commune also coordinated to build a video introducing the history of the mother-of-pearl inlay craft village.
“Through visiting and learning from Bat Trang and Son Dong, Chuyen My commune hopes to develop local craft villages and soon become a member of the World Network of Creative Craft Cities,” Mr. Nguyen Huu Chi expressed his wish.

According to Head of the Rural Development Department (Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment) Hoang Thi Hoa, in the period of 2025-2030, Hanoi aims to restore at least 5 traditional craft villages at risk of fading away; strive to recognize at least 10 new occupations and 25 craft villages, traditional craft villages; develop from 10 craft villages to traditional craft villages. Hanoi also plans to invest in synchronous infrastructure and preserve and restore the cultural space of craft villages, aiming to develop at least 3 craft villages associated with tourism; form 10 tours, craft village tourism routes, experiences to attract visitors...

According to Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa, learning from local experiences in developing craft villages associated with tourism is necessary. At the same time, she hopes that with the experience of being recognized by the World Craft Council as a member of the World Creative Craft Cities Network at the end of 2024, Bat Trang craft village, artisan Ha Thi Vinh will continue to support craft villages in the city to complete the criteria to join the Creative Craft Cities Network, raising the level of Vietnamese craft villages on the world map.
