US House Speaker Mike Johnson survives impeachment vote

Democrats and Republicans voted 359-43 to retain Mr Johnson as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, avoiding a repeat of the turmoil that occurred in October when Republicans ousted his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy.

Former President Donald Trump, who is running as a Republican for the White House, also said in a social media post on Wednesday that it was "not the time" for Republicans to try to remove their own House Speaker.

Meanwhile, Mr. Johnson said after the vote: "I appreciate the confidence of my colleagues in defeating this misguided effort." Earlier, Congressman Greene criticized Mr. Johnson for a series of compromises with the Democratic Party.

Mr. Johnson upset hard-liners in the U.S. House of Representatives by agreeing to pass a bipartisan budget bill and aid package for U.S. allies including Ukraine, without demanding strict security measures on the U.S.-Mexico border that Democrats rejected.
