ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI, continues to assert its leadership in the field of AI as it gains widespread use across the globe. As of July, ChatGPT recorded around 700 million monthly active users, equivalent to 10% of the world's adult population, according to a report by a research team consisting of experts from OpenAI, Duke University, and Harvard University.
The figures, published in a recent academic paper, show that the popularity of this AI chatbot has reached unprecedented scale.
“For a new technology, this speed of global spread is unprecedented,” the research team said.
Today, that number could be significantly higher. At DevDay 2025 in early October, CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT now has 800 million weekly active users. That’s a jump from the 100 million weekly active users he announced in November 2023, representing a growth of more than 700% in less than two years.
The report also revealed that as of July, ChatGPT handled more than 2.5 billion messages per day, equivalent to about 29,000 queries per second. This huge volume of interactions shows the increasing dependence of global users on chatbots in work, study and daily life.
ChatGPT’s explosive growth is a clear testament to OpenAI’s growing clout in the race to develop large language models (LLMs). Meanwhile, other competitors in the market are still quite far behind. Specifically, xAI’s Grok currently has around 65 million monthly active users, while Anthropic’s Claude and Perplexity AI are both around 30 million.
In just 2 years since its launch, ChatGPT has become a global technology phenomenon, contributing to shaping the way people approach, exploit and interact with AI in the new era.
