Ternana Club in Serie C (third tier) Italy has just caused a stir in the international media with a strange story. This team fired its head coach and then reversed the decision, re-signing him after only 3 hours.
The coach who finds himself in this ironic situation is Ignazio Abate. He played for AC Milan over 300 times and represented the Italian national team.
After retiring, Abate became a youth coach at AC Milan. He moved to Ternana in the summer of 2024, his first professional coaching role.
Abate used to play for AC Milan.
Ternana under Abate's leadership finished 2nd in Group B of Serie C. After 25 rounds, they were only 3 points behind the top team and had high hopes of competing for promotion.
However, the surprise happened 4 days ago when the Ternana board fired coach Abate. According to Calcio Mercato, the former AC Milan player lost his job due to a decision related to a player named Mattya D'Alessandro. This character is the son of the team's president.
Calcio Mercato also said that coach Abate intended to send D'Alessandro to another team on loan to gain experience. This made the team's owner, D'Alessandro's father, unhappy.
Ternana immediately chose coach Fabio Liverani as their replacement and scheduled the announcement for Friday morning last week. However, the appointment was soon cancelled.
The reason was that Ternana players requested a meeting with the team's management to protest. After an emergency meeting, the Ternana team president withdrew the decision to fire him and re-signed a contract with coach Abate.
The former Italian international was unemployed for just three hours. Despite the harsh treatment, Abate still agreed to return to his old position.
