According to The Sun (UK), the accident happened during a match in a tournament for players over 40 years old in Uruguay on October 19. Diego Forlan played for the Old Boys in a 4-1 win over Old Christians.
However, the Uruguayan football legend had an incomplete day when he suffered a terrible injury. In an overhead situation, the former Man United striker collided strongly with an opposing player, fell to the ground and could not continue playing.
Diego Forlan was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for a check-up. The diagnosis revealed three broken ribs and a collapsed lung, forcing doctors to perform a lung drainage procedure to help him breathe easier.
Fortunately, the 46-year-old's condition is now stable, although he still needs a long rest before returning to normal activities.
The Uruguayan striker told his family that the opponent had no ill intent in the collision, it was just an unfortunate situation in a friendly match. At the same time, he also expressed his gratitude to the medical team and those who supported him immediately after the injury occurred.
Diego Forlan is considered one of the most outstanding strikers in Uruguayan football. He played for many big clubs in Europe such as Man United, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and scored more than 200 goals in his career.
The Man United legend shone particularly at the 2010 World Cup, helping Uruguay reach the semi-finals and winning the title of “Player of the Tournament”. Forlan retired in 2019 after nearly two decades of professional football, ending an impressive journey with both his club and the national team.
