Mekong Delta: Children with encephalitis on the rise

On March 26, Dr. Chung Tan Dinh, Director of Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that the number of children hospitalized for encephalitis has increased in recent days. Specifically, since the beginning of March, the hospital has received 9 cases of children with encephalitis, of which 5 cases are currently in intensive care.

In recent days, the number of children hospitalized for encephalitis in the Mekong Delta has increased.

Accordingly, at the Department of Intensive Care and Pediatric Poison Control (Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital), the medical team here always has to work hard to take care of children with encephalitis. In the department, there are still 5 cases with severe symptoms that need to be monitored and actively treated.

Dr. Ly Quoc Trung, Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said: The children recently hospitalized had symptoms such as dizziness, headache, vomiting after eating, no improvement for many days, muscle aches, high fever... Through examination and testing, doctors diagnosed the above cases with encephalitis, with a severe prognosis and high risk of death, the treatment process is very complicated.

Specifically, baby HNA (8 years old, living in Soc Trang province), 3 days before being hospitalized, had a headache, dizziness, vomiting after eating, and was lethargic. When admitted to the emergency room for treatment, doctors diagnosed the baby with encephalitis, respiratory failure, pneumonia, with a severe prognosis, requiring special care and a ventilator.

Or the case of TTT (10 years old, residing in Soc Trang province) who was hospitalized with symptoms of continuous high fever, muscle aches, nausea, numbness in limbs, difficulty breathing, and urinary incontinence. Doctors diagnosed the child with encephalitis accompanied by pneumonia, with a poor prognosis requiring constant monitoring of vital signs and special care.

According to a report from Can Tho Children's Hospital, from February 2024 to now, the hospital has received 20 cases of children with encephalitis for treatment. Of which, from the beginning of March until now, 8 children have been hospitalized, an increase of 14.3% over the same period.
