A fulcrum to help women escape poverty

Identifying the work of supporting poor women and women in especially difficult circumstances as a key task, the Women's Union at all levels in Da Nang city has implemented many practical solutions to help members gradually stabilize their lives and escape poverty.

Care for livelihood support

Ms. Tran Thi Kim Lien (group 58, Cam Le ward) is the main breadwinner in a family of four, but unfortunately, she was involved in a traffic accident, which left her unable to do heavy work. Ms. Lien has elderly parents who need care, so the family's life is even more difficult and poor.

Recognizing her situation, the Women's Union of Cam Le Ward supported her with an overlock machine worth 4.5 million VND. With the means to work at home, Ms. Lien receives orders for garment processing.

“The sewing machine is my lifeline in the most difficult times. Thanks to it, I have a stable income and my children are better cared for,” Ms. Lien emotionally shared.

With the support of the Women's Union of Cam Le Ward, Ms. Phan Thi Anh Sa (Group 9) has strived to stabilize her life. With the situation of raising 3 small children and taking care of her sick elderly mother, Ms. Sa was given a sewing machine worth 7.5 million VND. From a few initial sewing jobs in the neighborhood, she now has a stable number of customers, earning about 7 million VND per month.

Merged from 3 wards Hoa Tho Dong, Hoa Tho Tay and Khue Trung, Cam Le Ward Women's Union has effectively implemented the models "Warmth of Love", "Support for vulnerable women", "Compassion for the community", thereby creating a fund of more than 1.3 billion VND.

From this resource, the association has supported the repair of 1 house, awarded 3 means of livelihood, supported 59 scholarships and provided non-refundable capital to 139 members in difficulty.

The Association also coordinated with the Social Policy Bank to continue to provide loans to more than 1,290 households through 33 savings and loan groups with a total outstanding loan balance of more than 131 billion VND. Particularly, the Women's Development Support Fund of the City Women's Union and the Ward Women's Union are managing more than 3.3 billion VND, helping 261 households access capital.

Thanks to practical support activities, the poverty rate in the ward has decreased significantly, and in 2024, 25 women members escaped poverty.

Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Cam Le Ward Le Thi Thu Huong said: "Although there are still many difficulties in the transition period, the union clearly identifies the work of supporting poor and disadvantaged women as a core and continuous task. In the coming time, the union will continue to promote its role as a bridge, mobilize social resources, innovate methods of supporting women in accordance with the actual situation, in order to effectively implement the goal of "No woman is left behind".

The Son Tra Ward Women's Union was established on the basis of merging the Women's Unions of three wards: Tho Quang, Nai Hien Dong and Man Thai. President of the Son Tra Ward Women's Union Thai Thi Phuong Lan said that in addition to donating means of livelihood and supporting capital, the union actively coordinates to mobilize funds to support housing for poor women.

A typical example is Ms. Tran Thi Hong (old Man Thai ward) who lives in a dilapidated house with cracked, damp walls and frequent leaks. The ward Women's Union in coordination with the Association for the Protection of Poor and Disadvantaged Women and Children of Da Nang city supported Ms. Hong with 60 million VND to build a new house.

Similarly, Ms. Mai Thi Hoa (old Man Thai ward) was supported with 60 million VND; two households Huynh Thi Bich Thuy and Nguyen Thi Bich Thu were supported with a total of 11 million VND to repair their houses.

In addition, implementing the Project "Supporting Women to Start a Business", the association also gave livelihood tools such as freezers, fishing tools, car repair tools, etc. to 23 disadvantaged women's households, with a total value of 260 million VND.

According to the Women's Union of Da Nang City, from the beginning of 2025 until now, the union at all levels has supported the construction and repair of houses for 20 poor and single women's households with a total cost of 870 million VND; and donated 100 means of livelihood to women in difficulty.

In the coming time, the association will continue to focus on solutions to support sustainable livelihoods, creating favorable conditions for women in difficult circumstances to escape poverty and stabilize their lives.

At the same time, strengthen coordination with functional sectors to provide vocational training, transfer technology and connect product consumption for members.

In particular, the City Women's Union will continue to review and grasp the actual needs in each locality, focusing on vulnerable women such as single women, women with disabilities, and ethnic minority women, thereby providing flexible and practical support.

The goal of the association is to help each situation be approached correctly, sufficiently and promptly, gradually escaping poverty sustainably and stabilizing life in the long term.
