Japanese businesses come to Vietnam to hunt for students

24 businesses from Japan came to Hanoi University of Science and Technology to directly interview and recruit students.

On November 4, thousands of students, mainly from Hanoi University of Science and Technology and some technical schools in Hanoi, attended "Job fair Sekisho 2023" to seek employment opportunities from nearly 30 businesses. Of these, 24 companies were from Japan, the largest number in the past three years of this event.

The booths were equipped with a large screen and many information leaflets. Company representatives were on hand to introduce and answer questions for students. According to the organizers, about 1,500 final year students or recent graduates registered for direct interviews with businesses on November 4-5.

Mr. Imahashi Tatsunosuke, representative of East Japan Institute of Technology Co., Ltd, enthusiastically introduced the company and its support policy when recruiting Vietnamese students.

Mr. Imahashi said the company does many projects related to embedded systems, machine control systems, and information systems. Coming to Vietnam this time, he hopes to recruit a number of employees with good programming skills, communication skills, and the ability to read documents in Japanese. The company pays a salary of 30 million VND for new graduates, supports housing, language training, visas, residence registration, and travel expenses.

"In addition to professional skills and Japanese, we need people who are open-minded, proactive, eager to learn and willing to overcome difficulties," said Mr. Imahashi.

Mr. Masaki Seki, General Director of Sekisho Group, also hopes to interview all registered students to find potential employees to work in Japan.

"We hope that Vietnamese students coming to Japan will not only work for large companies in Tokyo but also for small and medium-sized companies in neighboring cities," he shared, as an event organizer.

Mr. Taizo Mikazuki, Governor of Shiga province - Japan's leading industrial capital, said he has cooperated with Hanoi University of Science and Technology for the past two years, supporting Japanese language courses at the school and recruiting students to work in Shiga.

"Among the approximately 6,000 Vietnamese people living in Shiga, there are 20 Hanoi University of Technology students working for businesses. We want to create job opportunities for more students," he said.

Businesses said they came from Japan to recruit because they highly appreciate the ability of Vietnamese engineers.

"Many excellent and intelligent students, some of whom work at Sekisho Group for a few years, then return to open their own companies," said Mr. Seki.

Giap Manh Tuan, a final year student majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, took the opportunity to visit 4-5 companies in the morning and had an appointment for a direct interview in the afternoon.

Tuan said that half a year ago, he won a scholarship to study Japanese sponsored by Shiga province. By participating in the course, Tuan learned about and liked the clear and orderly way of working of Japanese companies. In addition, the male student found the income quite attractive, making him set a goal of working in Japan or at a Japanese company in Vietnam.

"I hope to soon realize this goal. The businesses I aim for are all related to mechanics, maintenance, and machine operation," Tuan said.

For Nguyen Hoang Dan, a final year student majoring in Information Technology, having Japanese companies come to the school to recruit is an opportunity to learn about the necessary conditions when applying.

Visiting the booths of 6 businesses, Dan determined to learn Japanese more thoroughly. Currently, he has reached level N4 (international Japanese language certificate has 6 levels, the highest is N1), while businesses often recruit candidates with N3 certificate or higher.

"Understanding the needs of companies will help motivate me to study and improve more," the male student said.

Associate Professor Nguyen Phong Dien, Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that the success of students at Japanese enterprises is a mark affirming the quality of training. Japan's technology level is very advanced and the working culture in enterprises is famous for its discipline.

According to Mr. Dien, Japanese enterprises highly appreciate Polytechnic students for their professional knowledge, which is equivalent to that of personnel trained in Japan, along with their diligence and creativity. That is also the reason why they come to recruit Polytechnic students, support language teaching and some other activities.

The students' limitations are language ability and corporate culture.

"Our solution is to cooperate with businesses to enhance students' professional skills," said Mr. Dien. The school is also focusing on training foreign languages ​​and other necessary skills so that students can meet the strict requirements of domestic and international businesses.

At the Vietnam-Japan 50th Anniversary Diplomatic Relations Conference on August 25, Deputy Director of the Overseas Labor Management Department Pham Viet Huong said that by the end of 2022, more than 345,000 Vietnamese workers were working and living in Japan. Of these, 65,000 were technical workers, engineers, and interpreters.

The Governor of Shiga Prefecture hopes that young Vietnamese working in Japan, especially in the fields of technology and engineering, will create human resources to develop Vietnam in the future.

"I also hope that one of today's candidates will become a director of a business in Shiga in the future," said Governor Taizo Mikazuki.
