Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Lewy body dementia often have abnormal accumulations of alpha-synuclein protein, according to research published in the journal Nature Medicine by Professor Hattori Nobutaka of Juntendo University's Faculty of Medicine. The discovery of protein particles in the blood is believed to have led to early diagnosis of the disease.
Using serum may help diagnose neurodegenerative diseases |
The team developed a technique to efficiently detect alpha-synuclein particles in patient serum using a protein separation method using an antibody that binds only to the abnormal protein. Using this method, the abnormal protein was detected in over 90% of people with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia patients.
Meanwhile, in people without the disease, less than 10% have the abnormal protein. The team also believes that the structure of synuclein particles varies depending on the type of disease, so the research could lead to simpler diagnostic methods, helping to reduce the burden on patients.
