On October 10, the European Union (EU) asked major technology corporations including Apple, Google, Snapchat and YouTube to explain the measures they are taking to protect children online.
Ahead of the EU Ministers meeting in Denmark, European Commission (EC) Vice President Henna Virkkunen said the EC had sent requests for information under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to the four platforms to gain an accurate understanding of the measures being taken to protect minors online.
This is not the first time the EU has made a request under the DSA. The bloc is currently investigating Facebook and Meta's Instagram, as well as TikTok, over concerns that tech giants are not doing enough to prevent children from becoming addicted to social media.
In addition, the EU is also considering the possibility of applying Australia's social media ban to children under 16 years old after some members of the bloc such as France and Spain restricted children's access to social media platforms.
In its rotating EU presidency, Denmark is pushing for stronger collective action to protect children through new regulations.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on October 7 that the country plans to ban social media for children under 15 years old.
The meeting of EU Ministers on October 10 is expected to focus on discussing age verification of users on social networks and necessary steps to create a safer online space for children./.
