Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) fell 0.2% to $9,371 a tonne in regular trading. It hit $9,466.50 in the previous session, last seen on July 18.

Trading interest was weak with half-day copper turnover at 7,287 lots, compared with a daily volume of 20,402 lots on Tuesday.

Both copper and aluminum are likely to trade in a narrow range as funds are preparing their positions ahead of the Fed decision, a trading source said.

Aluminum fell 0.4% to $2,519 with a large futures position on the LME to buy aluminum in October and sell in November.

Prices of the metal were largely supported by a weaker US dollar, which is now at a one-year low on growing expectations of excessive rate cuts from the US central bank. A weaker dollar makes the dollar-denominated metal cheaper for holders of other currencies.

But zinc and lead prices came under pressure after inventories at LME-monitored Singapore warehouses rose sharply.

Three-month zinc futures fell 0.8% to $2,923 and lead fell 1% to $2,019.

Lead inventories increased by 17% or 30,225 tonnes to 205,000 tonnes, while zinc inventories increased by 12,950 tonnes.

However, the increase suggests little change in supply and demand for zinc and lead, another trading source said, given large inflows and outflows of the two metals to Asian locations for leasing over the past few months.

Among other metals, nickel fell 0.7% to $16,175 a tonne and tin fell 0.3% to $31,850 a tonne.
