Preserving green space on Khau Ca hill

Son La Prison was built by the French in 1908. The historical relic of Son La Prison is a shining symbol of the revolutionary spirit and indomitable fighting spirit of communist soldiers and Vietnamese patriots. Over the past century, the structure has been preserved amidst the peaceful green of Khau Ca hill, bringing pride to every Son La citizen.

With its great historical values, on December 31, 2014, Son La Prison was recognized by the Prime Minister as a special national monument. Along with landscape protection, in recent years, the Son La Prison National Special Monument has always received investment in renovation, embellishment and preservation of the architectural values ​​and artifacts associated with the historical monument. Currently, many items of the project are still kept in their original state, regularly renovated to avoid deterioration, large prison areas have been repaired, the exhibition area for artifacts is arranged methodically and solemnly... The highlight of the monument is the To Hieu peach tree, the indomitable symbol of the communist soldier, which is specially cared for and always green all year round. In addition, the auxiliary items are also taken care of with a spacious and airy parking lot, establishment of regulations and a map of the monument's tour, and in recent years, an area selling souvenirs and OCOP Son La products has been added.

The work of landscape and environmental protection has always been considered a key task by the Son La Provincial Museum and Library, contributing to preserving historical values ​​and creating a green, attractive, and friendly image of the relic site for tourists. Mr. Pham Van Tuan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Museum and Library, said: In recent years, the unit has coordinated well with the Urban Environmental Services Joint Stock Company in taking care of trees, cleaning the environment, and protecting the landscape of the relic site. In particular, there are solutions to protect old trees, and at the same time, plant new trees and replace old trees to create a cool green space for the relic site. The goal is for every visitor who comes here not only to commemorate and show gratitude, but also to clearly feel the bright, green, clean, and beautiful relic environment.

The Provincial Museum and Library always pay attention to landscape improvement; upgrading signs, expanding internal roads, taking care of trees, ensuring the campus is always clean, beautiful and solemn. Currently, the relic site still retains many ancient trees that are carefully cared for, creating cool shade and blending with the architecture that is over a hundred years old, bringing a quiet, sacred space for visitors to experience.

Ms. Cam Thi May, a guide at the Provincial Museum and Library, shared: As a person who directly contacts and guides visitors to the relic, in addition to the task of explaining, we also propagate to visitors about maintaining public hygiene, protecting artifacts and trees. In addition, the officers and employees of the unit also regularly organize cleaning, planting flowers and trees in the relic area.

Currently, the Son La Prison National Special Relic is being planned for preservation, renovation, restoration and promotion of its value according to Decision 687/QD-TTg dated June 5, 2019 of the Prime Minister. The planning scope is 32.3 hectares, of which 7.8 hectares is the protection area of ​​the Son La Prison Relic and 24.5 hectares is the expanded research area, including the following points: The proposed historical relic and the natural landscape of the buffer zone around Khau Ca hill, Goc Oi valley related to the Relic. The planning has clearly identified the restricted area and controlled construction to protect the ecosystem and natural landscape of Khau Ca hill, associated with the conservation of the relic with the development of green space, cultural and historical space, harmoniously connecting the Son La Prison Relic with the relics in the buffer zone and the Northwest Square. This is an important step, both preserving original relics and contributing to protecting the ecological environment, promoting tourism development and local socio-economy.

Mr. Pham Hong Thu, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said: The Department is continuing to research and have specific advice to implement the proposal to adjust the overall planning according to Decision 687/QD-TTg dated June 5, 2019 of the Prime Minister in accordance with actual conditions as well as newly issued regulations. The purpose is to preserve the intact relic site, helping to promote the value of historical relics around Khau Ca hill area, especially the special national relic of Son La Prison.

Preserving the green landscape on Khau Ca hill is not only an act of protecting the environment and ecosystem, but also an expression of gratitude and responsibility of today's generation to their predecessors. Each tree, each road, each moss-covered brick here tells the story of a time of resilient struggle of communist soldiers. Protecting the green space of Khau Ca hill becomes “Historical and cultural park” contributes to maximizing the value of the special historical relic of Son La Prison, spreading pride in the revolutionary tradition to present and future generations.
