Lac Son chicken (scraping chicken) is a typical agricultural product of some communes in the Southern Phu Tho region.
Maintain natural farming direction
According to the farmers in Lac Son, Ngoc Son, Quyet Thang, and Muong Vang communes: “The Lac Son chicken breed (also known as the mo chicken breed) has been raised by the Muong people in the region for a long time. It has the characteristics of a slim shape, straw-yellow feathers (hens), or purple-red (roosters), a small head, a yellow or black beak, small legs, and a toned body thanks to a lot of exercise. The difference of Lac Son chicken is its quality with tough, firm meat, often yellow skin, very sweet meat when eaten and has a characteristic aroma.”
Ms. Quach Thi Hoa, Director of Huong Nhuong Chicken Breeding Cooperative, Lac Son Commune, maintains the natural farming method on hill gardens.
Ms. Quach Thi Hoa, Director of Huong Nhuong Chicken Breeding Cooperative, Lac Son Commune, said: Maintaining natural farming methods and rustic food sources are decisive factors in the quality of broiler chickens.
For cooperative members, in order to expand the scale and promote the development of livestock farming towards commodities, they always focus on applying techniques combined with existing experience in production. From there, they choose the method of free-range farming so that chickens can move, find natural food, improve health, resistance and also aim to have firm, delicious, quality and guaranteed meat.
In addition to using biological bedding to eliminate odors and create an environment for livestock to grow healthily, many farmers also pay attention to preventing and treating diseases for free-range chickens with herbs extracted from garlic, guava leaves, black ginseng... to treat common diseases in chickens, such as diarrhea, bronchitis, infectious runny nose... Thanks to that, Lac Son chicken products always ensure food safety.
Increase value, expand market
In November 2019, "Lac Son Chicken" was certified as a trademark by the Department of Intellectual Property, helping to improve the ability to manage product quality and value, while demonstrating the strengths of the locality, increasing the competitive advantage of the product in the market.
Mr. Bui Van Hue , Director of Chi Thien Chicken Breeding and Supply Cooperative, guides households on how to prevent common diseases in chickens.
Along with the establishment of cooperatives, cooperative groups, and value chain production linkage models, the flock of native chickens raised in the area certified with the collective brand "Lac Son Chicken" in the communes is increasingly multiplying. Typically, the Chi Thien Chicken Breeding and Supply Cooperative - Quyet Thang commune has expanded its satellite breeding area with the participation of dozens of member households, supplying millions of breeding chickens and broiler chickens to the market each year.
In addition to the product consumption channel in traditional markets, the "Lac Son chicken" product has reached out to the large market, present in many clean agricultural product stores, typical OCOP agricultural product sales points, restaurants, and supermarkets in provinces and cities across the country. Cooperatives strive to introduce and promote the Lac Son chicken brand on e-commerce platforms, supplying pre-processed, packaged, and vacuum-sealed chicken products.
In addition to the popular chicken meat products in the market, Lac Son chicken eggs are famous for their delicious taste and are always bought at a higher price than regular chicken eggs.
Currently, the area certified with the collective trademark "Lac Son Chicken" includes the communes of Lac Son, Quyet Thang, Thuong Coc, Dai Dong, Ngoc Son, Nhan Nghia, Yen Phu, and Muong Vang. The brand "Lac Son Chicken" continues to affirm the reputation, position, and value of chicken products raised by the people. According to comrade Bui Van Khanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lac Son commune, the protection and development of the brand "Lac Son Chicken" has contributed to improving the efficiency of agricultural economy , realizing the goals of socio-economic development, and sustainable poverty reduction in the locality.
Lac Son native chicken breed is included in programs to promote sustainable poverty reduction and brand development.
In the period of 2021 - 2025, within the framework of the National Target Programs on Sustainable Poverty Reduction and Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, a project on livelihood diversification and poverty reduction model development has been implemented.
Through sub-projects of raising Lac Son native chickens with the form of supporting breeds and initial feed and materials, the goal of sustainable poverty reduction has been promoted, creating conditions for poor and near-poor households in communes to rise up, while contributing to the expansion and development of the native chicken brand.
