Google has just announced a major change to the way text ads are displayed on its search engine, aimed at making the user experience more pleasant. Users can now hide all sponsored ads on the results page – however, this feature is only available after you scroll past the ad.

New way to display ads on Google Search
Currently, Google paid ads are labeled “Sponsored” individually for each result. But under the new change, Google will group text ads into a single, collapsible section at the top of the results page. This section has a more prominent “Sponsored” label that stays in place as users scroll.
In particular, the “hide ad” button is now located at the bottom of the text ad section. When clicked, the entire ad section will be collapsed under the “Sponsored” heading. If users want to see it again, they just need to click again to expand it.

Small but meaningful changes
Over the years, Google has tweaked the way ads look and feel to blend in with organic results, which has been frustrating for many users as it’s harder to differentiate between paid content and organic results. However, the new changes are seen as more user-friendly, allowing users to customize their experience to their liking.
According to Google, the main goal of the update is to “make navigation easier.” However, many people think that placing the hidden button at the bottom of the ad instead of at the top may make it less convenient to operate.
Ads still tied to AI in search results
Google said the “Sponsored” label will appear both above and below the AI Overview, a feature that uses artificial intelligence to generate content directly on the results page. This means users may need to scroll further to completely hide the ad when the AI section appears at the top of the page.
This update is now rolling out globally, applicable to both desktop and mobile users.
Advertising isn't Google's biggest problem
Some experts say that while the ability to hide ads makes the interface “more breathable,” the core problem with Google Search is not the ads, but the declining quality of search results. Many users say they have to turn to alternative search engines or AI chatbots to get more accurate information.
The new feature makes scrolling through results a bit smoother, but it doesn't address the decline in content quality that users have come to expect from Google Search.
