Google has just introduced a new security feature for Google Drive on computers (Windows and macOS), using artificial intelligence to detect and prevent ransomware attacks.
Online file sharing or cloud storage tools are ransomware infection tools that hackers often use. For example, embedding malicious code into pirated software.

This move by Google is seen as an important layer of defense to help protect users' files against the growing threat of ransomware.
Unlike traditional antivirus software that focuses on stopping malware as soon as it enters the system, Google Drive for Desktop focuses on the typical behavior of ransomware: mass encryption or file corruption.
When AI detects unusual activity, the system will perform sequential steps including:
- - Pause sync to prevent malware from spreading to the cloud.
- - Send warnings via computer and email for users to handle promptly.
- - Supports restoring files to their original state with just a few steps, minimizing the risk of data loss.
This technology is trained by Google from millions of real ransomware samples, and is continuously updated with threat intelligence from VirusTotal, helping the system adapt more quickly to new variants.
Individual users will get free file discovery and recovery, while organizations get additional administrative tools to monitor and troubleshoot from the Google Workspace Admin Console.
This is especially useful for sectors that are frequently targeted by ransomware such as healthcare , retail, or government agencies.
According to Mandiant statistics, ransomware accounted for 21% of all cyber attacks last year, with an average loss of more than $5 million per incident.
Google's integration of AI security directly into Drive is considered an important step forward, helping reduce risks and allowing users to continue working without interruption.
This feature is currently rolling out in Open Beta, enabled by default for most Google Workspace customers.
