To the West Grasslands - Poem by Luong Minh Cu

There are many rivers I have crossed
Why is my nostalgia reserved for Vam Co?
a nostalgia is always strange,
about the river,
below the distant battlefield?

Where the campaign seasons you passed
leafy shores close to the lapping waves
the waves from his heart,
you're gone, the waves are still blue.

Night march,
listen to the river sing
floating water hyacinth,
purple sunsets
Which rainy season do you cross the river?
Which dry season do you go to ambush?
But now I'm stuck on the ground waiting for you.

But now, the sky is suddenly blue,
and the flowers have bloomed yellow on the ground
the river reminds
years of fighting
The night the troops crossed the river and left.

Oh summer, wonderful motherland
your face is so bright now
the water flows down the river to the sea
when it meets the sea, the water turns into a river.

For my heart, ripe red rice fields
bustling harvest season,
Long An sky is innocent and bright again
I'm back to Vam Co Tay.

My homeland is still intact with clouds
and the four seasons of fruit intact
Vam Co Tay - please let me come back
with the love of the time of war.
