Thousands of Dalbergia tonkinensis trees tell historical stories in Huong Tra

Every March, rows of hundred-year-old Su trees compete to show off their beauty along the poetic Tam Ky River, making the Huong Tra countryside road (Hoa Huong Ward, Tam Ky City, Quang Nam Province) as beautiful as a watercolor painting. That beauty is even more meaningful when recently, 9 ancient trees in the population of thousands of Su trees were recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees.

Huong Tra village was formed in the early years of settling down, during the time of King Le Thanh Tong's expansion to the South. At that time, people were both busy making a living in peacetime and serving as soldiers in times of chaos. Being a flood-prone area, people built dikes, planted trees along the river, and planted sưa trees along the dikes to protect the village. From the initial sưa trees, up to now, the village road of Huong Tra has gathered thousands of ancient sưa trees, stretching more than 2 km. People cherish the sưa trees as "green lungs" protecting the villagers during storms. This is also a destination for tourists who love the golden color shining in the summer sun. Sưa has yellow flowers, a gentle fragrance, and a valuable tree trunk, so it is suitable as an urban tree. Over the past 20 years, the locality has planted nearly 2,000 sưa trees. On April 5, 9 sưa trees were recognized as Heritage Trees. The recognition of 9 Dalbergia tonkinensis trees as heritage trees during the "Tam Ky Dalbergia tonkinensis Flower Season - 2024" festival is an opportunity to introduce, promote and preserve the value of indigenous resources, raise awareness of environmental protection, and create a highlight for eco-tourism.
