Ha Long Bay is located in the Northeast of Vietnam, in Quang Ninh province, 165 km from the capital Hanoi . Ha Long Bay has an area of 1,553 km2, formed by 1,969 islands (of which 980 have names) of large and small limestone, overlapping in the emerald green water, creating a majestic and spectacular landscape as the quintessence of nature's arrangement for many centuries.
The magical limestone cave system hidden deep under the stone pillars is covered by tropical vegetation, exuding a wild, mysterious look, along with the remaining traces of the earth's development history, attracting tourists around the world to come and admire and explore.
In 1994, Ha Long Bay was the first Heritage of Vietnam to be listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding landscape and aesthetic value. Six years later (in 2000), Ha Long Bay was recognized by UNESCO for the second time for its geological and geomorphological value. On September 16, 2023, Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba archipelago ( Hai Phong City) were recognized as World Natural Heritage, becoming the first inter-provincial and municipal World Heritage Site in Vietnam.
Ha Long Bay is the 448th heritage in the World Heritage List and is the first natural heritage of Vietnam to be listed in this list.
The area of Ha Long Bay listed by UNESCO has an area of 434 km2, including 775 islands, of which 411 are named with many rocky islands, caves and beautiful beaches. Currently, there are about 10 caves being exploited.
The world natural wonder Ha Long Bay has been home to local people for thousands of years, bearing a long historical mark. They not only preserve but also promote the beauty of this place to tourists with the unique traditional cultural features of this area. The blend of culture and nature has created a vivid picture of the lives of local people.
Interestingly, not all the islands in this bay are accessible. Some islands are preserved intact to protect the ecosystem and wildlife.
