Coach Choi Won Kwon has yet to win any of his first four matches in charge in Thanh Hoa. The home match against Hai Phong almost became the "last straw".
Hai Phong FC scored two goals first in the first half. In the 28th minute, Antonio comfortably maneuvered in the penalty area and then shot the ball low, leaving goalkeeper Y Eli Nie rooted to the spot.
In the 43rd minute, Manh Dung had no difficulty in shooting from within the penalty area, the ball hit the Thanh Hoa defender's leg and flew straight into the net. Hai Phong led 2-0.
Thanh Hoa FC did not give up thanks to the youthful energy of Van Thuan and Ngoc My. Up front, striker Vo Nguyen Hoang took on the work that was supposed to be done by Rimario, who was on the bench.
In the 51st minute, Ngoc My crossed for Van Thuan to tap in and shorten the score to 1-2. In the 78th minute, center back Mamadou Mbodji jumped high to head the ball to equalize 2-2 for the home team Thanh Hoa.
The slump of Hai Phong FC players helped Thanh Hoa rise up. 1 point prevented Hai Phong from temporarily breaking into the top 3 with 7 points, missing the opportunity to accumulate points in the first leg.
Meanwhile, this is the 4th winless match of the Korean coach with Thanh Hoa. They only have 2 points after 4 matches and are likely to drop to the bottom of the table if Hoang Anh Gia Lai gets points in round 4.
Coach Choi Won Kwon is experiencing the harshness of Vietnamese football at the club level. The former assistant coach of the Vietnamese national team is under a lot of pressure from the Thanh Hoa audience when he has not won yet.
