iPhone 15 could help Apple dethrone Samsung

The latest report from TrendForce, an analyst firm, shows that the smartphone market is still in dire straits, with sales falling 6.6% to 272 million units in the second quarter of 2023, making it the worst quarter in 10 years. This means that the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in China has not helped much in the recovery of demand, and the Indian market cannot become the "savior" as expected. In addition, consumers are also more cautious in their spending habits due to the gloomy economic conditions.

While Apple typically weathers downturns better than other Android phone makers, the company still saw a 21.2% decline from the previous quarter and shipped just 42 million iPhones in Q2. Q2 2023 could be considered a worst quarter for Apple in terms of iPhone shipments.

Things will improve for Apple after the iPhone 15 series officially launches on September 12. TrendForce said that if the upcoming iPhone 15 series has better sales than expected, Apple could become the number one smartphone manufacturer in terms of sales in a year - something that has never happened before.

Apple still ranks behind Samsung, but things could change in Q4 2023

That would be a huge blow to Samsung's position as the number one market share company. Samsung has been trying to maintain its position, but the Galaxy S23 series is showing signs of cooling down and sales of the Galaxy Z Fold5/Z Flip5 are not as high as those of regular phones.

TrendForce's estimate is close to IDC's previous forecast, which said the overall smartphone market would shrink 4.7% in 2023, while iPhone sales would increase 1.1%. IDC also said that despite the lengthening replacement cycle, consumers are still willing to pay more for iPhones, which benefits Apple given the expected price hikes for the iPhone 15 series, at least for the Pro models.
