Samsung or Apple dominates the new generation of ultimate smartphone screens?

Samsung may bring the latest display technology to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, but the same could be applied by Apple to the 20th anniversary iPhone.

A new report reveals that the 2027 iPhone, the 20th anniversary version of the iPhone line, will come with a completely new display.

According to ET News , Apple and many partners have been quietly researching this type of screen for at least the past three years.

New cutting-edge display technology

This is an evolution of traditional OLED, with the key change being the removal of the polarizing layer – which is used to prevent light from fading on the screen surface.

The problem is that this polarizing layer makes current OLED displays significantly dimmer, forcing the device to consume more power to increase brightness to compensate.

A new technology called Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) – a color filter integrated into the protective coating – will replace the old mechanism. This filter reduces light reflection and at the same time eliminates the need for a polarizer.

The result is a display that is thinner, brighter, and, importantly, consumes less power. This means future iPhone users can enjoy a higher-quality display while still maintaining long battery life.

Previously, many reports had suggested that Apple would apply this new thin-screen technology to the iPhone Fold, the foldable iPhone that is still in development. However, this report emphasizes that Apple will bring CoE to the non-folding iPhone line, and is expected to apply it right away on the 20th anniversary iPhone model in 2027.

“Apple plans to apply CoE to its bar-type smartphones in 2027, to mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone launch,” an industry official said.

Aside from the display, Apple's 20th anniversary iPhone will feature a seamless all-glass design, an idea that has appeared in patent filings filed by Apple over the years.

The 20th anniversary iPhone is also expected to feature a groundbreaking design, with a bezel-less, frameless display. An early leak suggested that Apple was developing a four-sided curved display, offering a truly bezel-less visual experience. This would require under-screen Face ID technology and a front-facing camera hidden under the screen.

Samsung is one step ahead

The source also confirmed that Apple will not be the first to commercialize this technology. Most likely, the person who gave the information came from within Samsung, because immediately after that, this person emphasized: "We are trying to apply new technology to high-end models to confirm that Samsung is ahead of Apple."

In fact, Samsung has applied CoE since 2021 on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 model. However, this is only a limited test on the foldable line.

Samsung is expected to expand CoE technology to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, expected to launch in early 2026. This means Apple will be at least a year behind its biggest rival in the smartphone display field.

Who will dominate the new generation of screens?

Some previous reports said that the thin screen for the iPhone Fold would be produced by Samsung, but it is said to be a type of material and design that has never been applied by Samsung itself to its products.

This further increases competition between the two tech giants, as Apple depends on Samsung Display for production, but at the same time is a direct competitor in the high-end smartphone market.

The 20th anniversary iPhone event is not only symbolic for Apple, but also promises to be an important technological milestone. Equipping the CoE screen for the iPhone 2027 will help Apple affirm its innovation efforts, while creating a difference in the wave of AI and foldable smartphones that are shaping the future of the market.

As consumers increasingly demand brightness, thinness, and battery life, the new display could be a compelling factor that helps Apple maintain its leadership position – even if it isn't the first.
