This is the first group of 1,000 officers that Kenya has pledged to deploy to Haiti under a resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council in October 2023.

Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille praised the determination of the government and people of Kenya to stand with his country in the fight against the insecurity that is eroding life in Haiti.

Meanwhile, Kenyan President William Ruto believes that the presence of this elite force will help Haiti soon restore order and achieve long-term stability.

US Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere Brian Nichols welcomed the start of Kenyan forces in Haiti, but stressed that much work remains to be done to stem the tide of gang violence.

More than 2,500 people were killed or seriously injured in Haiti in the first quarter of 2024 due to violence involving armed groups, according to a United Nations report.

Violence is also a major reason why people in this country are forced to leave their homes. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there are currently more than 360,000 people living in a state of homelessness in the Caribbean country.
