After-hours pediatric examination - flexible service for patients

After more than 4 months of implementation, the model has shown practical effectiveness, contributing to improving service quality and patient satisfaction.

In modern life, many parents have to work all day, making it difficult to arrange time to take their children to the doctor during office hours. When their children show signs of illness or fever, many people have to wait until the next day or buy medicine for temporary treatment. Based on that reality, in June 2025, the Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital implemented the "after-hours pediatric examination" model to better serve the people's needs for medical examination and treatment.

The Provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital will implement the "off-hours pediatric examination" model from June 2025.

According to specialist doctor 1 Hoang Trung Uy, in charge of the Examination Department, Provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, the "after-hours pediatric examination" model has brought many benefits to both the people and the medical team.

The opening of additional examination hours helps reduce pressure during morning rush hours, helping the medical examination and treatment process run more smoothly. At the same time, patients have more suitable options, limit overload, and create a civilized and friendly medical examination and treatment environment.

Although organized outside the administrative framework, professional quality and examination and testing procedures are still fully guaranteed as during office hours.

Doctor Uy shared: Many parents work all day and only have time to take their children to the hospital at night. With after-hours examinations, children can be examined earlier and avoid self-medication at home.

In fact, records at the hospital show that the time frame from 5-7pm helps parents have more time to talk with the doctor, and children do not have to jostle or wait for a long time.

During business hours, the number of patients coming for examination is high.

Ms. Trieu Thi Dieu, Cam Duong Ward said: Before, every time my child was sick, I often had to ask for leave from work or wait until the weekend to take him to the doctor. Now, with the after-hours schedule, I can take my child right after work. The hospital has specialist doctors and gives thoughtful instructions, so I feel very secure.

After more than 4 months of implementing the model, the hospital recorded nearly 700 visits outside of business hours. Those who came to visit the model all highly appreciated the convenience, dedication and service attitude of the medical team.

The model has contributed to changing people's medical examination habits, creating more flexible options, while helping hospitals reasonably allocate human resources and reduce the load during peak hours.

Evaluating the "off-hours pediatric examination" model, Mr. Tran Hoai Bac - Director of the Provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital said that this is an appropriate step in the current medical administrative reform process.

“The model is identified as one of the specific solutions to reform administrative procedures in healthcare. The hospital focuses on innovating service style and attitude, aiming to put patients at the center, better meeting the increasingly diverse needs of the people. The expansion of service hours not only demonstrates a sense of responsibility, but also affirms the transformation of public hospitals in a new phase, flexible, dedicated, closer to the people,” Mr. Bac affirmed.

However, besides the positive aspects, Mr. Tran Hoai Bac also frankly admitted that the "after-hours pediatric examination" model has only achieved initial effectiveness and still faces many difficulties.

Accordingly, the hospital's location far from the center and poor communication are also factors affecting the number of patients coming for examination during this time frame.

Examination and treatment after hours still ensure full procedures as during office hours.

Mr. Tran Hoai Bac added: Up to now, many people still do not know about the hospital's after-hours examination model, which greatly affects people's benefits in accessing medical services.

Therefore, in order for the model to be truly effective and sustainable, in the coming time, the hospital will promote communication work to help people know and proactively choose the service.

The hospital is also proposing to the Department of Health to allow opening a second facility in the central area, thereby making it more convenient for people to travel.

From the implementation, it is shown that the model of "pediatric examination after hours" not only brings immediate benefits to parents and children, but also contributes to affirming the service role of public health in the innovation period.

This is a direction that clearly demonstrates the spirit of "taking the patient as the center", meeting the increasing demands for quality and flexibility in people's health care.

The model helps people have more flexible medical examination and treatment options.

In the context of the entire health sector promoting administrative reform, digital transformation, and moving towards a service-oriented health care model, specific innovations such as the “off-hours pediatric examination” model at the Provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital demonstrate the initiative and creativity of the medical staff. Every small change, if it comes from real needs, can create great social impact, strengthening people's trust in the public health system.
