First time in the Central Highlands - Central region to replace hip and femur with Megaprosthesis

This is a specialized technique of limb preservation for patients in the field of orthopedic trauma surgery.

On June 24, Hue Central Hospital successfully performed hip and femur replacement surgery using Megaprosthesis.

The patient is Ms. PTX, residing in An Cuu ward, Hue city, with a history of artificial hip replacement 17 years ago and had surgery again due to loose joints a year ago.

Over the past 4 months, the patient has experienced increased pain when walking, has had to use a walking stick, has difficulty moving, and has a decreased quality of life.

Through examination and imaging, doctors recorded widespread bone loss, fracture around the artificial hip joint, fracture of the bone fusion device, axis deviation and shortening of the upper limb by 7cm - a severe and complicated injury, with the risk of loss of limb function if not intervened promptly.

According to Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, Megaprosthesis is a complex technique, requiring high expertise and maximum coordination between specialties.

Megaprosthesis technique is considered the optimal solution for severe injuries that previously had a high risk of amputation.

After nearly 4 hours with maximum support of human resources and modern equipment, the surgery was successful, restoring the structure and function of the limb, and restoring equal length of both legs.

After surgery, the patient recovered well, was able to stand on his own and began the rehabilitation process.

Currently in Vietnam, there are several large hospitals in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City that have implemented this technique. Hue Central Hospital is the first hospital in the Central Highlands region to effectively implement the Megaprosthesis technique.

The application of this technique is not only an effective treatment solution for cases such as extensive fractures, bone loss, complications after joint replacement, but also opens a new door of hope for patients with bone cancer, complex bone lesions that previously had a risk of limb amputation, helping to improve mobility and contribute to improving the quality of life for patients.
