The liver transplant team of 108 Military Central Hospital supported Da Nang Hospital to perform the first liver transplant at this unit.

This is a milestone of special importance, affirming the effectiveness of cooperation between the two hospitals, while opening up opportunities to develop liver transplant techniques in the central region, helping patients access advanced treatment methods right in the locality.

Previously, at 9:00 p.m. on September 29, the two hospitals held an online consultation to agree on the indications and surgical plan for the first liver transplant.

On October 1, Da Nang Hospital sent teams to 108 Military Central Hospital to work and receive equipment and supplies for liver transplants.

On October 2, 108 Military Central Hospital sent three working groups to Da Nang to prepare for the transplant.

On October 3, the first liver transplant from a living donor at Da Nang Hospital was successfully performed with the direct support of leading experts from 108 Military Central Hospital.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital, shared that the liver recipient was a 53-year-old man with multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma on the background of hepatitis B and cirrhosis, and had undergone embolization many times.

The donor was the patient's wife, showing a humanitarian gesture and deep affection.

The transplant was performed as planned and went smoothly. Immediately after the surgery, the patient was removed from the endotracheal tube and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further monitoring. One day after the transplant, the patient was stable and the transplanted liver functioned well.

The health of both the patient and his wife has recovered well and is stable.

108 Military Central Hospital is currently the center with the largest number of liver transplants from living donors in Southeast Asia, implementing a variety of transplant types from living donor liver transplants, simultaneous liver-kidney transplants, to complex transplant techniques in patients with severe underlying diseases.

With nearly 300 successful liver transplants, the hospital's team of experts not only accumulated a treasure trove of valuable experience but also played the role of a "cradle" for training and transferring liver transplant techniques to many medical facilities inside and outside the military such as: Central Children's Hospital, Military Hospital 103, Military Hospital 175 , Hue Central Hospital.

108 Military Central Hospital is currently training liver transplant teams for Thong Nhat Hospital and Bach Mai Hospital. It is expected that these two units will soon perform liver transplants in the near future.

108 Military Central Hospital has identified liver transplant technology transfer as a strategic task to expand the network of liver transplant centers in Vietnam. Instead of concentrating all patients at central hospitals, proactive training and transfer helps patients access optimal treatment methods locally, shortening waiting times and reducing costs.

In this roadmap, supporting Da Nang Hospital to successfully carry out the first liver transplant is of special importance, marking a new step forward in the development of specialized techniques in the central region.

“108 Central Military Hospital believes that medical knowledge and technology should not be the private property of a single unit, but rather a resource that needs to be shared and spread. The success of the first liver transplant at Da Nang Hospital is the common result of the spirit of cooperation, the desire to contribute and the mission of 'for the patient, for science '. 108 Central Military Hospital will continue to accompany units across the country to expand the organ transplant network, contributing to bringing Vietnamese medicine closer to regional and world levels," Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Quang emphasized.
