TPO - Due to unfavorable weather, when the flower season began this year, some garden owners in Thoi An flower village (District 12) proactively reduced production, worried that the rain and sunshine would become more erratic towards the end of the year.
Thoi An flower village (District 12) is one of the flower gardens that supplies a large amount of flowers to the market during Tet. |
These days, Thoi An flower village (District 12, Ho Chi Minh City) is busier than ever. At this time, almost all garden owners have begun to take care of the 2025 Tet flower crop. |
This year, the erratic weather, hot sun and heavy rain have significantly increased the cost of investment and care. |
“The weather this December has been raining all the time, and we don’t know what will happen during the flowering period. Although there are solutions, it depends on the experience of each garden owner. However, the investment level will increase 3 times compared to previous years. And that means profits will decrease sharply,” said Mr. Le Phuoc Lam, owner of a flower garden in Thoi An ward. |
Mr. Lam said the garden's total flower output is currently around 30,000 pots, however the number has decreased by more than 10,000 pots compared to last year. |
The main reason was that last year's Tet flower season had too much unsold stock, economic difficulties caused many people to reduce purchases, and the erratic weather caused Mr. Lam's garden to also reduce plantings. |
Unstable prices and uncertain output make it difficult for flower growers to predict prices at this time. “Like every year, the average price of chrysanthemums in the market is from 100,000 to 150,000 VND, but during the Giap Thin Tet holiday, the price is only 70,000 to 80,000 VND,” Mr. Lam added. |
Not as large in scale as flower farms in the West and Central regions, but flower villages in Thoi An ward are still busy taking care of and harvesting to serve the market during the Lunar New Year. |
This time before Tet, the flower village is busy from 6am to 11pm. Sometimes, when it rains heavily, the flowers do not stick to the branches, so the workers have to work overtime. |
Not far from Mr. Lam's garden, Mrs. Trinh Thi Kim Lan's household also reduced its crop yield this year. |
Ms. Lan said that she is currently only planting about 7,000 pots of Tet flowers, a decrease of about 1,000 pots compared to last year's crop. |
"The number of Tet flowers decreases every year. Compared to previous years, the number of flowers I planted was up to tens of thousands of pots. Not to mention, in the middle of the year, heavy rain washed away seeds and fertilizers, forcing many seedlings to be abandoned. I was also very sad, but what I had to do was to do it," Ms. Lan shared. |
In Mrs. Lan’s garden, there are currently 6 workers working diligently. Each worker here is in charge of a stage such as: hoeing, weeding, watering, fertilizing and picking off excess leaves on the trees… |
To prepare for Tet, Mrs. Lan planted flower seeds in her garden 4-6 months ago. Now, the seedlings have grown tall, are in pots and the days of care have begun. |
Ms. Lan shared that every year, Tet flowers are very popular with customers, traders come to the garden to deposit, sometimes competing to buy. However, last year was the complete opposite, customers disappeared, only 2 people came to buy flowers. Ms. Lan had to find a place to sell the remaining flowers herself in all over HCMC or bring them back to the garden to cut. |
Flower gardeners all hope for favorable weather in the last months of the year, flowers blooming in time for Tet, high productivity and a more stable economic situation so that people and gardeners can celebrate Tet more happily. |
