Japan's NHK on March 20 quoted a coast guard source as confirming that seven people died when a South Korean-flagged chemical tanker capsized off the coast of Yamaguchi prefecture, western Japan.
NHK reported that the Keoyoung Sun reported a list at around 7 a.m. local time (5 a.m. Vietnam time) due to bad weather. The ship sent out an emergency distress signal.
There were 11 crew members on board at the time, including 8 Indonesians, 2 Koreans and 1 Chinese. Search and rescue teams have rescued 9 people, of whom 7 have been confirmed dead. Rescue efforts are continuing to find the remaining 2.
According to NHK, the ship was carrying 980 tons of acrylic acid, but no chemical leaks have been detected.
