Can Gio Whale Festival 2025: Raising the grand flag to open the 'Sea Festival'

On the morning of October 5, the flag raising ceremony of the Can Gio Whale Festival 2025 took place at Can Thanh Park, Can Gio Commune, Ho Chi Minh City.

The Can Gio Whale Festival has been held since 1913 (Year of the Ox) for 112 years. This is one of the folk rituals praying for national peace and prosperity, and favorable weather.

This year marks the 12th anniversary of the Can Gio Whale Festival being recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.

Sacred flag raising ceremony

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu - Secretary of the Can Gio Commune Party Committee, reviewed the history of formation and development of the Can Gio Whale Festival with folk rituals that create unique features for the Can Gio land.

“The Can Gio Whale Festival has become a cultural symbol that not only shows people's gratitude to nature, but also reflects the perseverance and courage of previous generations who built this place into a livable place.

The festival also shows the respect and gratitude of Can Gio fishermen for the Nam Hai god (whale) and the sea god" - Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu emphasized.

The organizing committee representative said that the Can Gio Whale Festival is also an occasion to summarize the fishing season at sea for fishermen and prepare for a new bumper fishing season.

The Secretary of the Can Gio Commune Party Committee added: "I call on Can Gio people to show hospitality, behave culturally, create a joyful and exciting atmosphere; together strive to overcome difficulties, love the profession, stick to the sea, go offshore, get rich, contribute to building and developing Can Gio commune to become more and more rich, civilized and affectionate."

Many exciting activities

The Nghinh Ong Can Gio Festival 2025, organized by the Organizing Committee of major holidays in Ho Chi Minh City, will take place from October 5 to 7 (14 to 16 of the 8th lunar month) with many activities and content imbued with traditional folklore and performing arts to serve the people.

The opening ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. on October 5, at the main stage of Can Thanh Park.

On October 6, at 6:00 p.m., there will be a ceremony to pay respect to the kind and gentle ancestors and old friends at the Mausoleum of Ong Thuy Tuong.

Also on the evening of October 6, there will be an art program Nghinh Ong Can Gio - Full Moon Festival to serve fishermen and tourists at the main stage of Can Thanh Park.

At 10pm on the same day, there is an activity of releasing lanterns on Can Gio beach to pray for favorable weather, a prosperous and peaceful life.

The main activity of the Can Gio Whale Festival is the Whale Festival on the sea and welcoming the Whale Festival group to Lang Ong at 9:00 a.m. on October 7, at Lang Ong Thuy Tuong, the mechanical ferry, and Tac Xuat ferry.

The closing art program of the festival will take place on the evening of October 7, at the main stage of Can Thanh Park. The Nghinh Ong Can Gio Festival has become a sea festival for the people of the windy and stormy Can Gio./.
