Late-ripening durian region
Mr. Ha Manh Vung - Director of Vung Nga Company Limited said that the company is exporting fresh durian to the Chinese market with an output of approximately 120 tons/day. "Our company purchases durian from farmers in Hoa Bac region as well as neighboring areas for export. This is a fairly late durian region in Lam Dong province as well as in the whole country, helping Vietnamese durian to have regular export products all year round", Mr. Vung said.
Mr. Vu Hoai Nam - Vice Chairman of Hoa Bac Commune People's Committee said that compared to early durian growing areas such as Da Huoai, Da Teh, Ha Lam or neighboring areas such as Bao Thuan, Di Linh, Hoa Bac area "follows" the cooler climate of Bao Loc. Therefore, durian in Hoa Bac area ripens quite late, not until late September, early October, it enters the peak harvest season. "Our durian area is approximately 1,500 hectares in harvest, not including the durian area in the construction phase, with 13 planting area codes and 5 packaging codes that have been granted, it is currently one of the key areas of Lam Dong durian. Therefore, we attach great importance to building a close link in the production and consumption of durian products between farmers and businesses in the area to protect sustainable output for durian trees", Mr. Vu Hoai Nam informed.
According to Mr. Nam, with a large area of durian bearing fruit, there are many businesses in the commune with headquarters, warehouses and processing factories. These businesses have purchased large quantities of fresh durian from farmers. “The entire Hoa Bac commune has 8 large businesses, with growing area codes as well as packaging codes specializing in exporting durian directly to the Chinese market such as: Bao Phuc Company, Hieu Tuyen, Hiep Huyen Company, B'laoFood, Long Thuy, Lam Ha and Thanh Cong Cooperative. The businesses have all proactively built growing area codes with farmers, purchased products according to contracts, processed and exported. This is the basis for us farmers to feel secure in investing in and taking care of durian areas, and actively expanding export growing area codes,” Mr. Vu Hoai Nam informed.
Link to build growing area code
Mr. Tran Xuan Thanh's family, village 3A, Hoa Bac commune has 2 hectares of durian that have begun to be harvested. Mr. Thanh and neighboring farmers are working with Hieu Tuyen Company Limited to build an export growing area code. Mr. Thanh said that the company and the commune are guiding people to complete documents and manage the garden strictly to meet the requirements of the Chinese side. "We must build a growing area code that complies with regulations, especially strict management of fertilizers and pesticides to avoid cadmium residues and yellowing. It is known that the Chinese side will come to the farmer's garden to film directly, so we are determined to strictly follow the technique so as not to affect the reputation of the Hoa Bac durian region," said Mr. Thanh.
“We encourage, motivate and guide farmers to strictly follow the cultivation process. At the same time, we also remind businesses to comply with the regulations of their partners, avoid abusing the growing area codes, local packaging codes, and avoid having the codes revoked,” Mr. Vu Hoai Nam informed.
Mr. Tran Van Hieu - Director of Bao Phuc Hoa Nam Co., Ltd., Hoa Bac commune, said that one of the current difficulties for Lam Dong enterprises is that the locality does not have a laboratory to test banned substances such as amber and cadmium on exported durian. Currently, enterprises still have to bring durian to Hanoi for testing, causing many difficulties for enterprises. Mr. Hieu proposed that Lam Dong build a testing room so that enterprises can test durian right in the locality, creating favorable conditions for safe durian export.
