How dangerous is social networking for children?

According to Tech Unwrapped , in recent years, there have been many studies pointing to the harmful effects of social media on young users. In January 2021, two British organizations shed light on the dangers that TikTok, Twitter, and the like pose to the health of teenagers. Now, research by the US Surgeon General proves this even more.

There are many concerns regarding the impact of social media on young people.

In his report, US Surgeon General Director Vivek Murthy highlighted the consequences that social media can have on the brain development of young children. Through research, scientists believe that the lack of security affects children and adolescents. Murthy said: "Virtually all adolescents in the US use social media and at this time, we do not have enough evidence to conclude that this experience is safe enough for them, especially at the vulnerable stage of brain development emotionally and socially."

Murthy believes that excessive use of social media at this young age can lead to many problems such as behavior, eating, depression, damaged self-image, poor memory and difficulty concentrating.

The report states that 46% of surveyed young people aged 13 to 17 said they felt bad about themselves because of social media. The problems listed above can have serious consequences, leading to suicide in the most severe cases.

Despite all this, the US Surgeon General believes that this does not mean that social media should be eliminated. For them, Snapchat, TikTok or Twitter can also bring certain benefits to children's development such as creating a space for personal expression, the ability to create and maintain online friendships, discussions of similar interests...
