According to the Indian Express , a SpiceJet flight, flight number SG 2906, had an accident while taking off from Kandla airport (Gujarat state, India) on the afternoon of September 12.

The Bombardier DHC8-400 (Dash 8-Q400) lost part of its landing gear shortly after leaving the runway at 14:39, but continued its journey to Mumbai.

At that time, air traffic controllers observed a large black object falling from the plane while taking off from runway 23. The object rolled to the right side of the runway and was later identified as the outer wheel of the landing gear and metal rings.

Passengers filmed the moment the plane lost a wheel in the middle of the runway ( Video : The Vibrant Kashmir).

A passenger-taken video shows the outer wheel of the right landing gear falling off as the plane lifted off the runway. The wheel rolled off the runway into an empty lot next to it as the plane continued to climb. A man can be heard saying, "The wheel fell off."

The Bombardier DHC8-400 is designed with a tricycle landing gear system, including two nose wheels and four main wheels (two on each side).

According to Times of India , the pilots proactively declared an emergency. At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, a full-scale emergency was declared at 3:51 p.m. to prepare for the flight to land.

However, the plane still landed safely on runway 27 and taxied into the terminal and all passengers disembarked normally.

SpiceJet confirmed the incident: “On September 12, an outer wheel of a Q400 aircraft en route from Kandla to Mumbai fell off the landing gear after take-off. However, the flight landed safely and all passengers and crew were safe,” a spokesperson for the airline said.

CSMIA airport representative also confirmed that the incident did not affect flight safety: “The plane landed safely, all passengers and crew were safe. Airport operations returned to normal shortly after. Safety is always the number one priority.”
