In mid-October, Nguyen Khanh Vu Khoa (40 years old, photographer) from Ho Chi Minh City came to Moc Hoa district, Long An province (now Tay Ninh province) to capture images of the typical lotus season of the West . Every year, during the flood season, people will row sampans, drift along the water and harvest lotus flowers one by one.
Water lily season lasts from September to November. Being a flower of the river region, easy to grow, fast to grow and develop well, the fields in Tay Ninh are covered with pink, purple and white colors of this flower when it is harvest time.
There are usually two types of water lilies: cultivated and wild. The type that people cultivate has a thick stem, large flowers, and is 1.5-2 m long. The wild water lily, also known as ghost water lily, has a thinner stem, 3-6 m long. Water lilies have a softer, more spongy stem than other aquatic flowers, but have a resilient vitality.
During the flood season, from early morning, the women of the West happily wear traditional Vietnamese traditional dress, row three-leaf boats to harvest lotus flowers. Along with aquatic resources, lotus flowers are a product that helps people improve their lives. This flower can be bought and sold at the market, used to decorate houses or processed into daily dishes such as sour soup, hotpot or dipping sauce...
Under the skillful hands of the women, each bunch of water lilies is rolled up, washed of the stubborn mud, arranged into bundles and loaded onto boats. Water lilies are grown year-round, but at their peak, each flower only blooms for a few hours a day, withering within 3-5 days. Therefore, in October, boats and canoes move busily across the water lily fields.
The scene of fanning water lilies and arranging bunches of flowers on flooded fields has become familiar during each flood season. Passionate about photography and traveling , Khoa learned about Moc Hoa and the water lily season in advance since 2024. This year, he arrived early in the morning, when there were many boats and canoes, excitedly recording the harvest scene. The photos taken from above provide a satisfying perspective for viewers.
The outstanding feature of water lilies is their ability to grow tall during the flood season. When the water rises, the water lilies also grow strongly, floating higher than the water. In addition to the fields, water lilies also grow among the cajuput trees. For the people of the West, the water lily harvest season is considered a cultural cross-section.
In recent years, Moc Hoa district (old) has become an attractive destination for tourists with its close-up lotus viewing tour. Here, sampans will take visitors to visit lotus fields or weave through the green cajuput forests, then enjoy delicious dishes made from lotus.
According to this photographer, the most prominent feature of the flooded fields are the bright pink lotus flowers mixed with the traditional Vietnamese dress of the Western women. Looking from above, one can feel the rusticity and peace of the river region, the scene of neatly arranged flowers, seemingly unreal, comes from the heart of the people. The whole scene seems to come from memory.
