Russia intercepted nearly 10 Storm Shadow missiles aimed at Crimea

Russia claims to have shot down eight Storm Shadow cruise missiles, but appears to have missed two long-range ATACMS missiles in a coordinated strike on Crimea.

"On the afternoon of October 30, the Ukrainian army carried out an attempt to attack the Crimean peninsula with eight Storm Shadow cruise missiles. The attack was neutralized by combat-ready air defense forces, and all missiles were shot down," the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement today.

Mikhail Razvozhaev, mayor of Sevastopol, said earlier that two air targets were shot down over the Crimean capital, sending debris falling in several locations and injuring one person.

Rybar, a pro-Russian military account with more than a million followers on Telegram, said on the same day that Ukrainian forces carried out a "coordinated attack" and two Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) fell near the village of Olenivka, in the east of the Crimean peninsula.

"Air defense units let two ATACMS missiles through, but a series of pre-emptive measures prevented them from causing serious damage," the account said, adding that the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet later detected and destroyed three suicide drones approaching the Sevastopol military port.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry announced on the same day that it "hit a strategic target of the air defense system" in western Crimea, but did not disclose the information.

Russian officials have not commented on the information about ATACMS missiles attacking Crimea.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 despite protests from Ukraine and the West. Crimea has been under constant attack in recent years, as the peninsula is a rear base for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and a vital supply route for Russian forces in southern and eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian leaders have repeatedly said they will retake Crimea.
