Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on December 10 that Israel's use of Hamas's terrorist attack on October 7 to justify collective punishment of the Palestinian people was unacceptable, and called for international supervision on the ground in Gaza.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly blamed the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas on the failure of years of US diplomacy in the Middle East, while Moscow has also positioned itself as a key player with ties to all the major players in the region.

On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office issued a statement saying that in a phone call with President Vladimir Putin earlier, Netanyahu expressed his "dissatisfaction" with Moscow's vote in favor of a resolution at the United Nations Security Council calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“The Prime Minister expressed his dissatisfaction with the position of the Russian representative at the United Nations and many other forums,” the statement said.

On December 8, the US used its veto power to reject a resolution at the United Nations Security Council calling for a ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip.
