Vingroup proposes to study sea route connecting Can Gio with Vung Tau

Investing in the sea route will shorten travel time, connect functional areas in the city, create momentum for socio-economic and commercial development and expand sustainable urban space.

Vingroup Corporation has just sent a document to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City proposing to study and invest in a sea route connecting Can Gio and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (old) under the BT (build-transfer) form.

According to Vingroup Corporation, on June 11, 2025, the Prime Minister approved the Project to adjust the master plan of Ho Chi Minh City to 2040, with a vision to 2060; in which developing modern transport infrastructure and improving intra-regional and inter-regional connectivity capacity are identified as key strategic directions.

After the merger of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province with Ho Chi Minh City (and Binh Duong ), the need to develop a direct connection axis between the coastal areas became urgent. Can Gio and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (old) are areas with strategic locations for marine economy, ports, tourism and ecological urban areas, but the current infrastructure is limited, mainly depending on ferries and roundabout routes.

“Investing in the sea route will shorten travel time, effectively connect functional areas in the city, and at the same time create momentum for socio-economic development, trade and sustainable urban space expansion,” Vingroup stated in the proposal.

Therefore, in the spirit of accompanying the realization of key traffic infrastructure planning, the Group proposed that the City People's Committee allow enterprises to research and invest in a cross-sea route connecting Can Gio and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (old) areas under the BT form.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau (old) has many advantages, but has not yet fully exploited its potential and advantages, especially in terms of seaport system. The first reason is that the road traffic connection between Ba Ria-Vung Tau (old) with the center of Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast provinces is still limited and not synchronized.

National Highway 51 is currently the main road traffic route connecting Vung Tau-Dong Nai with Ho Chi Minh City, however the route has a very large traffic volume, far exceeding the original design.

To enter the center of Ho Chi Minh City, vehicles must travel via the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway or the Cat Lai ferry, which is overloaded and often congested, especially on weekends and holidays.

Since 2021, the Vung Tau-Can Gio sea ferry route has been put into operation. However, vehicles have to wait quite a long time, the cost for both people and vehicles/ferry trip is still quite high. Not to mention the complicated sea weather, which greatly affects ferry operations.

Therefore, the ferry route is only convenient for people living near the Can Gio area, while most other areas still choose to go via National Highway 51.

In March 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport (now the Department of Construction) and the consulting unit conducted a preliminary study of investment options for the southern coastal route in Ho Chi Minh City.

One of the proposed options is to build a main route and a connecting road to the Ba Ria-Vung Tau coastal road via the Can Gio sea-crossing bridge.

When there is a sea bridge, if you move from the center of Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau, you will pass through Can Gio, helping Can Gio become a new transit center between the city and the southern sea.

Tourists from Vung Tau can also easily travel to Can Gio for entertainment and relaxation, creating a large flow of visitors and developing inter-regional tourism.

Currently, Can Gio area is receiving quite strong infrastructure investment. The Can Gio coastal urban tourism project was started in mid-April 2025.

Traffic infrastructure projects connecting this area such as the intersection of Rung Sac road with Ben Luc-Long Thanh expressway, Can Gio bridge, high-speed railway... are also being researched and implemented./.
