Losing just 5% of your weight increases your risk of death, especially in older men.

Healthy older adults who lose a significant amount of weight are at increased risk of dying early from cancer and heart disease, new research shows. Meanwhile, gaining weight in old age does not increase mortality.

A research team from Monash University, Australia, analyzed the annual weight of more than 16,000 patients aged between 65 and 70 in the US and Australia, who were followed for four years.

If weight loss is unexplained, older adults should monitor their health more closely.

The specific results are as follows:

Men who lose 5-10% of their weight have a 33% higher risk of early death, and if they lose more than 10% of their weight, the risk increases to 289%.

Women who lose 5-10% of their weight have a 25% higher risk of early death, and if they lose more than 10% of their weight, the rate increases to 114%.

Dr. Monira Hussain (Monash University), lead author of the study, said: The results show that even losing just 5% of weight increases the risk of death, especially in older men, according to CNN (USA).
