Of the 13 “undecided” voters, 10 described the 81-year-old Democratic president’s performance against Republican candidate Trump as weak, confusing, embarrassing and difficult to watch, according to a Reuters snap poll.

Presidential debates typically have limited impact on voters, but the story could be different in the 2024 US election. Biden and Trump are locked in a tight race, and the election could be decided by just a few thousand votes in a handful of battleground states.

Mr Biden's weakness has worried other Democrats, likely deepening voter concerns that he is too old to serve another four-year term.

Seven in nine voters disappointed by Mr. Biden's performance say they are now leaning toward Mr. Trump because they no longer believe Mr. Biden can perform his duties as president.

Three of them said they would definitely vote for former President Trump in a rematch with Mr. Biden on November 5, although two of them said they did not like the Republican candidate.

Meredith Marshall, 51, who lives in the Los Angeles area, said the debate shocked her. She voted for Mr. Biden in 2020, but is now leaning toward Mr. Trump because she described Mr. Biden as lacking mental clarity.

About 20% of voters said they were undecided about a candidate in this year's US presidential election, were leaning toward third-party options or were unlikely to vote, according to the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.
