Born into a family with a tradition of salt making, Mr. Nguyen Van Lac (An Thanh hamlet, An Ngai commune, Long Dien district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) learned and boldly converted to a high-tech shrimp farming model (CNC), creating a stable income. Never stop learning.
Billionaire high-tech shrimp farmer
Born in 1970, in his youth, Mr. Lac followed his family's salt-making profession. However, salt-making is hard work, often falling into the situation of good harvests but low prices, making income unstable.
In 2019, after learning from experience from acquaintances, he decided to switch to shrimp farming model. He invested in 8 ponds (1,000m2/pond), applying high technology.
“Different from conventional farming methods, applying high technology is using 70% of the area for water treatment, 30% of the area for shrimp farming. My family is raising shrimp on an area of 7 hectares, of which only 2 hectares are farming ponds, the rest are water treatment ponds,” Mr. Lac shared.
Thanks to good water treatment, along with technical support, shrimp seed and feed supply from CP Vietnam Company, the first shrimp crops were clearly effective.
From 1 facility with 8 initial ponds, he expanded the scale to 2 facilities, with 24 ponds, 2 white-leg shrimp nursery ponds and a wastewater treatment settling pond system.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lac (left cover), a successful high-tech shrimp farmer in An Ngai commune, Long Dien district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, guides workers at the facility to check the water source for shrimp farming.
Every year, Mr. Nguyen Van Lac receives Certificates of Merit from Long Dien district and An Ngai commune for his achievements in production, business and support for social security work.
He also received the Certificate of Merit from the Provincial Farmers' Association three times for his outstanding achievements in the movements "Farmers competing to build new rural areas" and "Farmers competing in good production and business".
The shrimp larvae are released into the nursery pond for about 2-3 weeks and then transferred to the dome house for further rearing for 1.5 months, then transferred to the pond, and after about 100-120 days, they can be harvested. With the form of shrimp farming, Mr. Lac's Manh Cuong 1 and 2 facilities harvest 6 shrimp crops/year.
The shrimps are of uniform size, beautiful appearance, firm meat, so they are purchased by traders to sell in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Dak Lak and some other provinces. After 3 months of farming, the shrimps reach a weight of 30-34 shrimps/kg, yielding 30-32 tons/crop (current purchase price is 170-180 thousand VND/kg), bringing his family a profit of 1 billion VND/crop.
As an amateur shrimp farmer, he constantly learns and gains experience in shrimp care. Investing in a dome system helps shrimp reduce the risk of disease and loss, and especially maintains a stable water temperature for shrimp.
In the last days of the year, the temperature drops to 21-220C or on the hottest days, the outdoor temperature reaches 36-380C, but in the dome house, the water remains at 27-320C, creating favorable conditions for shrimp growth.
During the farming process, shrimp need to be cared for at every stage, and the water source must be clean to keep the shrimp healthy, bright red, and free of green skin or yellow mouth. “Raising shrimp is like having a baby at home,” Mr. Lac said.
Sharing heart
Not only providing a stable income for his family, Mr. Lac's two establishments also create regular jobs for 32 local workers, with an average income of 7-9 million VND/person/month and create jobs for dozens of seasonal workers.
Currently, he is expanding the CNC shrimp farming model, preparing 2 more ponds with an area of 4,000m2/pond, to create more jobs for local workers, especially children of farmers in difficult circumstances.
He is also willing to share the secrets of shrimp farming and how to get rich from shrimp with those who intend to change careers, or farmers who are raising shrimp, to learn from his experience. “Learning and sharing every day helps me gain more experience and techniques to raise shrimp better,” Mr. Lac shared.
According to Ms. Phan Thi Thao, President of the Farmers' Association of An Ngai Commune, Mr. Lac is a typical local farmer, the first person in the commune to raise shrimp on the land of An Ngai, which has a tradition of salt production. His success has helped a number of households in the commune boldly convert and get rich by raising shrimp.
“In addition to production and business, he also pioneered in supporting scholarships, supporting education promotion associations, farmers' associations, and charitable activities in the commune with an amount of 20-30 million VND/year,” said Ms. Thao.
