Pakistan declares Imran Khan's marriage illegal

This is the third sentence in a week for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for revealing state secrets and 14 years for bribery along with his wife Bushra Bibi.

Mr Khan was removed from office by a vote of no confidence in April 2022. He has since been charged with nearly 200 crimes, all of which he denies.

The latest verdict focuses on an Islamic law known as "iddat", which stipulates that a widow or divorced woman must wait three months before remarrying, so as not to raise doubts about the child's father in the event of a pregnancy.

“A court has declared the marriage of former prime minister Imran Khan and Busra Bibi illegal and each of them has been sentenced to seven years in prison,” his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said in a statement.

Mr Khan, who came to power in 2018, has been detained in Rawalpindi for months, while Ms Bibi is under house arrest at her home on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad.

The PTI party is at a serious disadvantage ahead of Pakistan's February 8 election, with many of its leaders jailed.
