Many rare animal species discovered at Ea So Nature Reserve

After more than 2 months of surveying and setting camera traps at Ea So Nature Reserve, experts recorded 179 bird species and 30 mammal species, many of which are listed in the Vietnam Red Book.

On August 20, Ea So Nature Reserve coordinated with the Center for Nature Conservation and Development (Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations) to announce the results of biodiversity surveys at Ea So Nature Reserve and the Krong Nang Watershed Protection Forest Management Board (Dak Lak province).

Accordingly, in more than two months of field surveys and camera traps along the route at Ea So Nature Reserve, experts from the Center for Nature Conservation and Development recorded 789 vascular plant species, belonging to 148 families, 494 genera; including 1 critically endangered species, 9 endangered species and 11 near-endangered species.

Regarding animals, 179 bird species (19 orders, 54 families) were recorded, of which 8 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book; 30 mammal species (15 families, 6 orders), of which 22 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book; 48 reptile and amphibian species (12 families, 2 orders), of which 22 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book.

At the Krong Nang Watershed Protection Forest Management Board, the investigation team recorded 639 species of vascular plants (116 families, 443 genera); 54 species of reptiles and amphibians (19 families, 4 orders), of which 14 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book; 9 species of mammals (6 families, 5 orders), of which 2 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book; 125 species of birds (17 orders, 45 families), of which 5 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book.

Notably, for the first time in Ea So Nature Reserve, a number of rare animal species were recorded, including: Small fish hawk, group IIB (rediscovered after more than 20 years); Silver-backed chevrotain, critically endangered group (previously only recorded in Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Phu Yen provinces).

According to the Director of Ea So Nature Reserve, Le Minh Tien, the results of this survey comprehensively assess the biodiversity in the forest area managed by the unit. This is also a valuable source of data to help build a more effective plan for forest management and protection and biodiversity in the future.

Ea So Nature Reserve has an area of ​​26,848 hectares and Krong Nang Watershed Protection Forest Management Board has an area of ​​7,800 hectares. Currently, the two units are carrying out procedures to merge and upgrade to a national park.
