Colon resection using ICG color marker

Provincial General Hospital No. 2 has just successfully performed colon resection surgery using ICG color indicator for a cancer patient.

Previously, patient PVX, 70 years old in Tang Loong commune, was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain and occasional bloody stools. After examination, tests, and imaging, doctors at Provincial General Hospital No. 2 discovered that the patient had a tumor in the right colon.

The pathology results showed that the patient had colon adenocarcinoma. After consultation, the doctors recommended laparoscopic surgery to remove the right colon using ICG color indicator. After 2 hours, Mr. PVX's surgery was successful. Currently, the patient is receiving post-operative care and is in stable health.

Compared with conventional endoscopic methods, endoscopic surgery using ICG color marker helps increase the ability to accurately identify metastatic lymph nodes for thorough dissection, thereby increasing the effectiveness of cancer cure and reducing the recurrence rate.

Doctor To Minh Hung - Deputy Director of Provincial General Hospital No. 2, said: ICG is a color indicator, when injected into the body, it will clearly display the lymph node map, helping doctors clearly identify cancerous pathological tissue, metastatic lymph nodes, from which radical resection can be performed. In particular, this method also helps reduce the rate of rupture and leakage of the anastomosis after surgery by clearly determining the amount of blood flow to the anastomosis, ensuring a safe resection area for the patient, limiting damage to neighboring structures, ensuring good surgical results and minimizing complications.

It is known that Provincial General Hospital No. 2 has routinely deployed laparoscopic colorectal surgery in cancer treatment, with more than 100 cases successfully performed. However, laparoscopic surgery using ICG color indicator is the first method performed at the Hospital, opening a new step forward in colorectal cancer treatment, helping to reduce surgery time, ensure safety, reduce post-operative complications and bring higher treatment efficiency for patients.
