Chicken prices increase, farmers excited to restore flocks

Since the beginning of August, chicken prices have been continuously increasing, and favorable consumption markets have helped farmers make a profit after a long period of losses. Joy has returned to many farms as people are excited to expand their scale, promote herd restoration, and prepare goods for the year-end food market.

About half a year ago, the price of commercial chickens at farms fluctuated from 37,000 to 45,000 VND/kg, sometimes even lower, causing many farming households to suffer heavy losses. Currently, the price of chickens has increased sharply, reaching from 55,000 to 80,000 VND/kg depending on the breed and raising time, helping farmers earn significant profits.

In Xuan Quang commune, the atmosphere in the chicken farms became more bustling. Each bag of bran was moved into the coop, the feed troughs were continuously replenished, the bustling sound of chickens signaled that a bumper crop was approaching.

Ms. Vui Thi Thuy's family is taking care of a brood of more than 7,000 chickens, mainly crossbred chickens. Every day, she spends almost all of her time in the barn, from checking the floor, rice husk bedding, feeding troughs to cleaning the farming area. The family has fully vaccinated the chickens from 5 days old to over 1 month old, ensuring that the flock is healthy when entering the fattening stage.

Ms. Vui Thi Thuy shared: “In February, my family sold 7,000 chickens at only 37,000 VND/kg, a loss of nearly 500 million VND. The last batch sold for 55,000 VND/kg, earning a profit of about 200 million VND. Last year, chicken prices were low for a long time, making farmers very difficult. Now that prices have increased, I am starting a new batch to prepare for the year-end market and the Lunar New Year, just hoping to keep a good price to make up for some of the old losses.”

The joy is not only for Ms. Thuy's family. Mr. Phan Nhat Quang's farm - Director of Xuan Tien Livestock Cooperative, currently raises 50,000 chickens, reaching maximum capacity. Since mid-2025, the chicken market has begun to improve, with prices remaining high and stable for many months.

“Our farm mainly raises hybrid chickens and sugarcane chicken No. 1. Currently, the selling price of sugarcane chicken No. 1 is 78 - 80 thousand VND/kg, sold out as soon as it is sold out. Hybrid chickens and Ho chickens fluctuate at 60 - 62 thousand VND/kg. Compared to the beginning of the year, the price has increased by about 25 - 30 thousand VND/kg” - Mr. Phan Nhat Quang - Director of Xuan Tien Livestock Cooperative shared.

Currently, Xuan Tien Livestock Cooperative has 5 members, maintaining a total herd of over 80,000 pigs per litter, raising 2 litters/year. The Cooperative is promoting consumption links with businesses and wholesale markets to stabilize output and avoid price risks.

Xuan Quang Commune is a locality with strengths in poultry farming with a total herd of more than 870 thousand birds. The whole commune currently has over 200 medium-sized farms and ranches, developing in a concentrated direction, applying biosafety procedures to improve efficiency and limit disease risks.

Mr. Do Hong Quan - Vice Chairman of Xuan Quang Commune People's Committee said: We guide people not only to expand the scale but also to ensure good veterinary hygiene and disease prevention conditions, and at the same time participate in the chain to have a stable output. Especially, at the end of the year and on the occasion of Lunar New Year, the commune coordinates with units to balance the supply, avoiding the situation of good harvest but low price.

According to experienced breeders, chicken prices will be relatively stable in the coming time because supply and demand are at a balance. However, many people are still cautious, saying that the herd restoration should be divided into small stages, not mass production during Tet to avoid the risk of surplus. According to the assessment, the reason for the increase in chicken prices is that at the end of 2024, chicken prices will drop, many households are hesitant to restore their herds, causing a decrease in supply. Along with that, the control of dirty food and imports of unknown origin will be tightened, creating opportunities for domestic livestock products to be consumed smoothly.

The agricultural sector recommends that livestock farmers need to calculate carefully and avoid expanding too quickly without a solid consumption link.

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province, the total poultry herd in the first 9 months of 2025 reached more than 13 million, equal to nearly 100% of the annual plan and increased by over 7% over the same period in 2024. This growth comes from many households proactively converting models, taking advantage of empty barns after the African swine fever epidemic to raise chickens, ducks, and geese, helping to maintain a stable source of income.

Along with that, disease prevention work has been vigorously implemented. Many localities regularly spray disinfectants, distributing over 20,000 liters of chemicals to prevent avian influenza. Thanks to effective disease control, the province's livestock production has gradually recovered and developed stably. Many households have invested in renovating barns, applying biosafety farming techniques, focusing on breeding and nutrition to improve productivity and meat quality.
