Elanga after a decline in form at Newcastle. |
On October 18, the Swedish player was substituted right at half-time in the 1-2 defeat to Brighton in round 8 of the Premier League. A sign that coach Eddie Howe's patience is being seriously tested.
Elanga was signed by Newcastle for £55 million from Nottingham Forest, with the expectation of bringing speed and innovation to the attack. However, after 11 matches, the former MU player has not scored or assisted. His weak performance against Brighton earned him only 4/10 points.
Things have turned around for Elanga so quickly. He exploded at Forest last season, scoring 18 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions, becoming one of the Premier League’s most dangerous strikers. But now, Elanga is a shadow.
Criticism of Elanga has been growing on social media. Many people believe that Elanga should be benched to allow Jacob Murphy to return to the first team, at least until the Swede finds his footing again. Some harsh comments describe him as a "fast but clumsy player" who "loses the ball all the time".
His current form puts Elanga under tremendous pressure, having to adapt to Howe's complex tactical system while also being pressured by a huge transfer fee. In a Newcastle team that is thirsty for goals and confidence, Elanga has turned into a disappointing "flop".
