"In the past, strokes often occurred in the elderly (70-80 years old and above), but now this disease is increasingly occurring in young people. After a stroke, patients may face many complications that affect their own lives and their families. Because complications after a stroke are not only related to movement but also to communication, cognition, memory, emotions, psychology...", Dr. Le Khanh Dien, Head of the Department of Rehabilitation, An Binh Hospital, former Vice President of the Asia- Pacific Speech Therapy Association, shared on the sidelines of the An Binh Hospital Science and Technology Conference on October 4.
According to Dr. Dien, in the past, people were only concerned with the rehabilitation of stroke patients - such as walking, moving limbs, and reducing muscle contractions. However, world health organizations now emphasize comprehensive rehabilitation, including cognition, emotion, memory, communication and swallowing. These are the factors that determine the quality of life of patients after stroke.

Many people after stroke suffer from emotional disorders.
Many people after a stroke experience emotional disorders such as crying easily, laughing easily, depression, or cognitive disorders, memory loss, and even vascular dementia. Some people lose the ability to speak or understand others - this not only causes a deadlock for the patient but also puts the whole family under stress because they cannot communicate and care effectively. "A person who used to teach, MC, or do work that requires communication but suddenly cannot speak, that is a huge shock," Dr. Dien shared.
In addition, stroke patients may also experience swallowing disorders, making eating and drinking a challenge. Along with that are problems with muscle stiffness, muscle atrophy, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and lower limb venous occlusion due to prolonged inactivity.
“There are things that seem normal, but after a stroke, eating a spoonful of porridge or drinking a sip of water becomes precious when swallowing function is affected,” said Dr. Dien.

Comprehensive early recovery for stroke patients
Dr. Dien emphasized that rehabilitation is not only about restoring movement but also about restoring quality of life - helping patients regain the ability to communicate, feel, remember and integrate into society. He recommended that patients should be brought to a rehabilitation center as soon as possible, because early intervention will bring higher efficiency.
“In medicine, expensive machines are not always needed. Sometimes, just scientific rehabilitation exercises, the support of a team of medical professionals, and the patience and will of the patient and their family, are enough to help them gradually regain their voice, smile and life,” said Dr. Dien.

An Binh Hospital has been awarded Platinum certification in stroke treatment - an important milestone affirming its ability to provide emergency care and fast, effective treatment for patients in the early stages.
"In particular, in rehabilitation , An Binh Hospital is cooperating with universities in Australia and the US to strongly develop the field of speech therapy and rehabilitation after stroke and traumatic brain injury , helping to improve cognitive function, communication and movement for patients, especially the elderly with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's," Dr. Giang shared.
